Rangers striker James Beattie is targeting qualification to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Beattie's side were given a difficult task to get through after being drawn against Manchester United, Valencia and Bursaspor in their group.

The Scottish giants are not among the favourites to progress, although Valencia will be weaker with the talents of David Silva and David Villa no longer at their disposal.

But Beattie is hopeful Gers can pull off a surprise, as well as relishing a return to England to play United at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

"It's very exciting for both myself and the whole club to be playing in the Champions League - especially starting off at Old Trafford," he told Rangers News.

"I watched the draw in the hotel I'm staying in with Vlad Weiss and we both had one eye on the group with AC Milan and Real Madrid in it.

Special

"But for the club and the supporters, taking on United isn't a bad alternative. It'll be something special.

"A few people have said to me they fancy us to qualify for the last 16 of the competition in second place. Who knows what will happen. We'll have to wait and see.

"But doing that would be fantastic. We know Bursaspor are the champions of Turkey and Valencia are a massive club who are waiting to move into their new stadium.

"They're not teams we know an awful lot about, but I know the staff here have been watching them already and they'll enlighten us as much as they can.

"The draw has created a real buzz about the city and I think everybody is looking forward to the group."
