Maurice Edu knows Rangers cannot afford to take their eye off the ball with a date with Manchester United looming large.

The Gers are set to face the Red Devils in their opening UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday.

That contest has captured the imagination, as Battle of Britain encounters can always be relied upon to get pulses racing.

However, before they make their way to Old Trafford, Rangers have the small matter of an SPL fixture against Hamilton to contend with.

Edu insists full focus must be given to Saturday's match before attentions are allowed to turn to a glamour clash with United.

"The Old Trafford game is obviously going to be exciting and we're all looking forward to that, but at the same time you've got to take care of business before that," he said.

"We're not looking past this game this weekend - that's our focus right now. After that game we'll turn our attention to the game at Old Trafford."

While keen to avoid being distracted by what is to come, United States international Edu admits it is difficult not to get excited by continental competition.

Belief

He accepts that Rangers will be underdogs heading into their meeting with United, but is adamant that Walter Smith's men are capable of springing a surprise.

He added: "You've got to go into games believing in yourselves. If you don't then you've already lost half the battle.

"If you mention Manchester United around the world, everybody knows about the club and the history there and how good their team is.

"But we're going to go there and try and get something out of the game. We'll all be up for that game and aim for a positive result and come back with something."

Edu is also aware that Rangers need to put on a good show in the Champions League this season as they are the only SPL representatives left in Europe.

"It is important because we're the only Scottish team still remaining in these competitions," he said.

"It's definitely important we go out there and show well for the country and represent the club.

"You never know down the line this could prove to have some more significance than what we know now."
