Aston Villa caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald has admitted that the team's exit to Rapid Vienna in the Europa League may now result in him not getting the permanent manager's job.

MacDonald impressed in his first game with a 3-0 win over West Ham on the opening day of the season, however, since then a 6-0 defeat at Newcastle and Thursday's 3-2 defeat at home to Rapid has seen a rapid downturn in fortunes.

With no permanent appointment immediately forthcoming, MacDonald stated that he expected matters to be business as usual for Saturday's game against Everton.

However, with a disastrous exit from Europe, at the same stage by the same team as last season, owner Randy Lerner may now consider a more established boss as the successor to Martin O'Neill.

"It may have an influence. But I must stress it is the media who have put me up as first choice," MacDonald said.

"I have never been told I was first choice and expect nothing to change until after the (Newcastle) game on Sunday.

"It is a big blow for Aston Villa to go out of Europe again. A lot of the lads were disappointed to go out last season.

Major blow

"It is a major blow for them. They are professional footballers and proud of what they do.

"My own position is not uppermost in my thoughts 10 minutes after a game. It is not about me but how the players and the football club react on Sunday."

The Scot admitted he was bitterly disappointed to see his side exit at the qualifying stage but stated that it was down to his team's own shortcomings for conceding three goals and missing a penalty.

"I am very disappointed. We were in total control at 1-0 and gave away a silly equaliser," he said.

"We also missed a penalty and gave away a silly third goal. We made three silly mistakes and we are out of the tournament.

"You can't legislate for individual mistakes from international players.

"But as a group we score goals and we will accept responsibility for mistakes as a group as well."
