Irish side Sligo Rovers have given themselves a great chance of progressing to the Europa League play-offs after a 0-0 draw in Ukraine against Vorskla.

Sligo will be delighted with holding Vorskla ahead of the second leg of their third round qualifier back at The Showgrounds next week.

The evening was not as good for Ireland's other representative St Patrick's Athletic as they also travelled to Ukraine.

St Pats went down 2-0 to Karpaty with goals coming in either half from Artem Fedetskiy and Andrei Voronkov.

Rennes secured a comfortable 5-2 win in their tie with Georgian side Metalurgi Rustavi.

Razak Boukari and Jonathan Pitroipa both bagged braces for Pierre Dreossi's men.

Dutch outfit Den Haag have it all to do ahead of the second leg back in Holland after they were beaten 3-0 by Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia.

There was better news for their fellow Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar as they claimed a 2-0 win over Czech side Jablonec thanks to second-half goals from Pontus Wernbloom and Johan Gudmundsson.

Bundesliga side Mainz were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Romanian outfit Gaz Metan.

Italians Palermo grabbed a last ditch draw as Fabriazio Miccoli levelled in injury time against FC Thun in Sicily.

Goals from Benjamin Luhti and Marc Schneider sandwiched a goal from Josip Ilicic and that looked set to give them victory, before Miccoli pounced at the death.

A Jose Antonio Reyes brace gave Atletico Madrid a 2-1 win over Norwegian side Stromsgodset at the Vicente Calderon.

Elsewhere, there were also first leg wins for the likes of AEK Athens, Bursaspor, Legia Warsaw, Sparta Prague, Olympiakos, Club Brugge, Dinamo Tblisi and Red Star Belgrade.
