Hughes: Ankle injury

Northern Ireland captain Aaron Hughes has been ruled out of his side's Euro 2008 qualifier against Iceland.

Hughes, who has been struggling with an ankle injury, had already been ruled out of the clash with Latvia on Saturday.

However, it was hoped the Fulham defender would be fit to join his Northern Ireland team-mates for Wednesday's meeting with Iceland.

Hughes, though, will now return to Fulham to work on his fitness after Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington agreed it was the best option.

It is hoped Hughes will be ready to return to international action in time for Northern Ireland's next qualifier against Sweden on 17th October.
