Cannavaro: Ankle surgery
Fabio Cannavaro has undergone surgery on his injured ankle after being ruled out of Euro 2008.
The World Cup-winning captain picked up the problem in training on Monday following a collision with Italy team-mate Giorgio Chiellini.
He has now gone under the knife at a clinic in Vienna and the Italian soccer federation have expressed they are satisfied with the outcome of the operation.
They said in a statement: "The surgery lasted little more than half an hour and was perfectly successful."
The Real Madrid defender is expected to be sidelined for a few months but he will stay with the Azzurri squad in Austria to offer support during the tournament.
Alessandro Gamberini of Fiorentina has replaced Cannavaro in Roberto Donadoni's 23-man party but a decision has yet to be taken on who will captain the side.
