Ballack: Real leader
Franz Beckenbauer believes the leadership of Michael Ballack will be key to Germany's chances of beating Spain in the Euro 2008 final.
Ballack is battling to shake off a calf injury to lead out his country in Sunday's showdown at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna.
The midfielder, who missed the 2002 World Cup final against Brazil through suspension, has been instrumental in Germany's progress through the tournament.
German legend Beckenbauer has praised Ballack's influence and believes Spain do not have a player who can match the Chelsea ace's leadership skills.
"The one who has impressed me most in the German team has been Ballack," said Beckenbauer.
"He has really grown into his position as captain and now also scores decisive goals. He scored in the 1-0 win against Austria, he scored the very important goal in the 3-2 win against Portugal and he has turned into a real leader.
"This has been a real positive development in him as a player.
"Spain do not have a chief on the field like Germany has in Michael Ballack.
"They have fantastic players like Cesc Fabregas, but no leader on the pitch, no real captain. And for that reason Michael Ballack can make the difference.
"He did against Portugal when, from the first minute to the last, his body language said, 'I'm here. Anyone who wants to beat Germany must beat me, defeat me, get through me first'.
"Ballack has been a real captain. And he can be a key player in the final because he is the man who dictates the game.
"I'm delighted for Ballack that after his many disappontments in finals today in the Ernst Happel Stadium will be the culmination of his career.
"It is such a great chance for him to win his first big title. He is going for it, really fighting for it and I wish him good luck."
