Ramos with his 'top-quality' signings
I think you've got to give this manager a chance. I believe he's cleared out the dead wood, there's young exciting players there and I think Tottenham could be a surprise package this year.
Graham Roberts
Quotes of the week
Juande Ramos has been splashing the cash and ringing the changes as he prepares for his first full season in charge of Tottenham Hotspur.
Robbie Keane and Paul Robinson lead the list of familiar faces that have gone with Luka Modric, Geovani dos Santas, Heurelho Gomes and now David Bentley passing them on the Seven Sisters Road in the other direction.
Sky Sports viewers will get the chance to see how the Ramos' revolution is taking shape this weekend when Tottenham take on Celtic and Borussia Dortmund in the Feyenoord Jubilee tournament.
Before the action kicks-off, Sky Sports News asked former Spurs skipper Graham Roberts what he makes of the coming's and going's and their chances of success this season...
Sky Sports News: It's been an interesting first pre-season for Juande Ramos, 10 players have left, six have been brought in and over £50 million has changed hands...
Graham Roberts: I think the manager has looked at the whole situation and I think last year the players let the club down. It wasn't good enough for the team and then you get the likes of Robbie Keane coming out and saying he wants to play for his boyhood heroes - you've got to let players go when they're in that mood. You don't want an unhappy situation in the dressing room. I know people who are there and they said they've been walking around with their heads down and just moping about, so you've got to get rid of them.
Dimitar Berbatov has to go as well. I think the chairman has done the right thing, he's got a lot of money for Keanie, who was a great player for Tottenham. I think he had a one in two goal record, which is fantastic but he had already made up his mind that he wanted to play for Liverpool. They would have had a moping player all season, so you have got to let them go. With Berbatov as well the chairman is holding out to get the best price that he can and let this manager rebuild a team to get us into the top four.
SSN: With so much upheaval in one summer perhaps this is not going to be the season when Spurs and Juande Ramos turn things around. Maybe a lot of Spurs fans might have thought that last year was the blip when they finished 11th after a miserable start, but it could be difficult this time as well...
GR: Well I'm not so sure - although I think that the manager is fantastic. The first thing he has done is gone in and got them fit. They'll be the fittest team in the Premier League this year because I know the way they have been training and I know what he did to them this year.
Earlier in the season they were faltering in the last parts of games and conceding silly goals from set-pieces, but he sorted that out and we won the Carling Cup. I believe there are only two or three things that Tottenham have a chance of winning: the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Uefa Cup. If they won another cup this year the supporters would be delighted, but let's give him three years to sort this club out because there are some average players there. He's bringing the right players in, he's bringing quality in and that's what we need.
SSN: What do you think the fans will make of David Bentley?
GR: I think they will be absolutely delighted. He's made it known that there's only one club that he wants to play for and he's got a great cross and a fantastic shot. Aaron Lennon, when he plays, will go down the line and cross the ball and nine times out of 10 it will go behind, but Bentley will make sure they go in front of goal. I think the likes of Darren Bent and the other strikers that the manager wants will be absolutely delighted with him. He's a top-quality player, he's an England international and I think it's the right way forward.
SSN: You've talked about that strike partnership of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane - were they the best in the Premier League on their day?
GR: Yes, but I saw them at the beginning of last season when they played Everton and Berbatov threw all of his toys out of the pram. He wanted to go, he was moping around the pitch and we lost 3-1. In the first four or five games he wasn't interested, but when they got to the cup final he seemed to decide he wanted to stay. He wants to move on this summer, but Manchester United will have to pay the price that Tottenham want.
The chairman's right to hold out because Berbatov's a wonderful player. He's the best player they have got so they're not going to give him away on the cheap. The chairman has the right to do that. There's a few names being thrown around like Arshavin and Milito, so bring them in or let the manager have the funds. If you look at all the players going out - Tanio, Robinson, Chimbonda, Keane, Cerny, Berbatov, Malbranque, Kaboul... there's got to be £70million there. I'm sure this manager would love some of that to spend.
SSN: With the players they've got there now, who would be in your starting XI for the opening game of the season against Middlesbrough?
GR: Gomes will come in as goalkeeper, Hutton will play right-back, Woodgate and King are the best two in Britain at centre-back when they're fit and I'd put Bale at left-back, even though we haven't seen the best of him. In midfield you've got the likes of Modric, Dos Santos, Jenas, Bentley and Bostock - who has played in every pre-season game and has been fantastic. I think they'll play with five in midfield against Boro with Bent up front on his own. But I would think in the next week to 10 days there will be another three signings at least.
SSN: If there are signings to come, what would be the priorities in terms of positions?
GR: I think you need a ball-winner. I like Didier Zokora, but I don't think he's strong enough to be in there. I think Arshavin would be a good signing and Milito will come in for definite. I also think we desperately need a left-sided player to give us that balance. I don't know who that might be.
SSN: If they get those players, where could Spurs finish next season?
GR: I think they can finish in the top seven. I don't think we'll break into the top four; it will be two seasons before we do that. But I think you've got to give this manager a chance. I believe he's cleared out the dead wood, there's young exciting players there and I think Tottenham could be a surprise package this year.

Keane was a great player for our club but to be honest if he felt it was time to move on then receiving 20 million for him was a fantastic decision by our management..... With our new signings so far this season im feeling very optimistic i have full faith in ramos as i feel he will bring out the best in our players, Modric looks to be a great signing but cant wait to see our new wizard in action dos santos he looks amazing and a great buy for the club, everyones hoping for a top 4 finish and to be honest i think with the support that levy has shown our club he deserves to see success more than anyone.....

Very good article, I agree with a lot of what Graham has said. I definitely think that if we can use the money wisely and replace Keane, and probably Berbatov, with quality, hungry strikers, then this would inject a lease of new life into the squad, which looked to have gone as far as it could under Jol. So far Ramos has impressed me, he's improved the fitness and attitude of the team, and he's done well so far to slim down the squad and get rid of a lot of the second string players like Tainio and Chimbonda. The signings he's made also look very promising, although they are still very young and will probably need some time to bed into the team and the pace and power of the Premier League. I think Arshavin would be a good signing on the evidence of the Euro's, but I would be cautious if I was the board not too over spend as we have done in the past, as you never know how players from weaker leagues in Europe will fare in the Enlgish game. A combative central midfielder is definitely what is required in order to give a better defensive shield to the back line. I would prefer the board to splash out on a Senna or Makelele type player. Still, the signs look good under Ramos, but we've said similar things before without success! Fingers crossed this is the year of the Spurs, COYS!

David Bentley makes me laugh!! That season he was at Arsenal he wanted to play in Bergkamps position & didn't want to play on the wing even though AW believed that was his best position. He leaves & goes to Blackburn & makes his name, wait for it... PLAYING ON THE WING!! While Spurs have made a few good signings, again they will struggle & they will not break into the top 4 anytime soon. Clearly Bentley was not listening at the Arsenal Academy because he foolishly believes that this move is a step upwards... No, you left a mid-table team for another mid-table team and gave us a nice £7M which paid for Aaron Ramsey. See you on 29th October 2008 - ARSENAL ALL THE WAY!!

Although It seems that Juande Ramos is making big changes , still Tottenham are lacking of defenders . I think Tottenham need at least 2 more world class defenders as well as another defensive midfielder This year they are going to play very fast one touch football and very offensive one . My prediction is that Spurs are going to play fantastic football but they cannot match with the likes of Man Utd , Liverpool ,and Chelsea . 6th place .

I agree with many of the comments above but leave predictions alone. What I'd like to see is the Spurs players enjoying their football this season but tightening up at the back. Let's see the flair and one touch football but a bit more tenacity in defence. Hoping for sucess this season but feel we do need another class striker and another strong defender as back up.

Despite these potentially great signings, I still feel that we need a defensive holding midfielder. Spurs will always score goals but conceding just as many has always been our problem. Although the dire figure of Paul Robinson has now departed, for the past two seasons we have conceded goals consistently through the middle of the park. I can't count the amount of long shots that have gone in! Opposition players shouldn't be getting time on the ball to line up a belter. That is the holding mids' job, and Zokora hasn't stopped them! Edgar Davids did that job fantastically! Fletcher from United is a good choice. Someone to put there body in the line of fire and break up everything through the middle. That is why United and Chelsea hate it when United play him. Man is not a footballer but a warrior!Zokora isn't that man We also need a centre back to fill in for Ledley when he will get injured! Coloccini looks a good prospect, but I want Kompany. Someone has to give this guy a chance to prove he is as good as everyone thinks he can be! Ramos was right to get rid of the Robinson, Chimbonda, Malbranque, Tainio and even Keane. They all gave the ball away far too much, and you can't do that in the Ramos Revolution!I dread to say but he has to let Berba go too, he doesn't want to wear the shirt anymore, so don't give him the priviledge of wearing the famous white and blue. Top four could be on the cards, but a cup trophy is a cert. Uefa Cup for the boys from the Lane.

Firstly thanks to Robbie Keane, sorry to see him go but thats football. Ramos seems to be a very shewed manager and looks to have made some great signings. Yes Berba should go no player is bigger than the team. I would not like to predict a league finish until at least ten matches with the way the team has changed it could take a while to gel. Whatever happens im sure Spurs will still play lovely one touch football.

I can not believe some of the over optimistic comments coming from Spurs supporters. If we want to break into the top 4 we need to look at how the present top 4 act & copy. Stability in Management & players. Arsenal & Man Utd have not changed Managers in years. Man Utd have several players that have been there years and only make a few changes each year. You need a good age mix. Young teams look good but never win things just look at Arsenal. Spurs will never achieve a top 4 until they stop selling their top players to these teams. How many goals will Keane score against us in the next few years. The new signings look good but look at the poor signings of the past that were hailed as good but now being sold. Had we held on to Keane & Berbatov then we may have got close to the top 4 but without them roll on 2009/10. The difference between a good team & a very good team is the strikers who convert chances and whilst we still do not know who we will have in that department come 1st September I will be surprised if they are better than the 4 that started last season. I disagree that we should have let Robbie Keane go. It sends out a message to others that contracts mean nothing, as if you want to leave you can. Robbie was my favourite player and I believe had he stayed would have got over it & played for the team. Man Utd will not sell Ronaldo, who also wants to go. We must stop being a dealing club looking to buy players to sell in a few years time at a profit. I hope we have got it right this time with the new signings and that the Manager & players are still here in 3/4 years time & then just maybe we will finally do what we should have in 2005 and finish 4th. At this point in time I am less optomistic for the forthcoming season than at this stage last year or the year before when I truely believed we could make the breakthrough & qualify for Champions league. Do it once then we can attract the best & keep them.

Great business for Keano (good player but not worth 20mil). Juande has sorted out the middle of the park and there are not going to be many sexier midfields than Bently, Modric, Jenas and Lennon/Dos Santos. Need cover at CB and another option up front (re sale of Berbs). I would like to see Bent given a 15 game run. Think he will come through but he is a confidence player. His pre season form will do him no harm and I believe he can be a 20+ premiership goals a season player! Just as the old enemy surprised a few people last year with their ealy season challenge, I think they are going to under perform this season. Losing Gilberto, Flamini and Hleb from the middle of the park will come back to bite them! UP THE JUANDE!

Good article. I think Ramos is the best thing that has happened Spurs and if he gets enough time and playroom in the teams transfer policy we will break into the top 4. Players like Keane and Berbatov, sad to say, has to go because of their mentality towards Spurs. We need to show that we want people to be proud to wear the jersey and if they want to leave we will cash in big time. Levy did that. One thing im surprised about is the lack of interest from spurs to sign another top quality center back. King and Woodgate are one of the best in Premier league but if they get injured we are doomed. I feel that we don't have enough quality to back them up and I think that we need to have more competition in defense as we do in midfield! Anyone agrees?

Sad to see Keano go, but if we use the money wisely I don't think he'll be missed. In some ways, his leaving helps Ramos to mould the team in his own image more quickly; ditto Berbatov. If there was 1 player we could bring in it would be Graham Roberts in his prime! You were an absolute legend Robbo and I hope our current players can emulate your guts, ride and heart.

Fantastic signings for Spurs. I actually enjoy watching Spurs because I believe they play the most attractive football in the Premiership. But like we know, no team can win anything in world football today without a strong holding player and Spurs have refused to solve that problem. Break the bank and bring in Marco Senna. United should have bought him 3 years ago for £4m rather we gifted Spur £18m for the very-average Carrick. Don't make the same mistake, salvation lies in a good holding player..Ingler, Mehmet Aurelio, Senna, De Jong, Diarra, Xabi Alonso can all be tempted with a good offer.

Keane was a good piece of business. A good player and has been great for Spurs but never clinical or prolific. I do not think Arshavin is worth the prices being touted in the papers. I think he's had one good tournament and could turn out to be like Baros at Liverpool after he top scored in the Euros. I would rather see Pavlyunchenko come in. Milito at 29 is too old to be a long term benefit to the club and I think we should reinvest money from Berba sale on a proven striker like Villa. We have never addressed the problem caused when Carrick left and Zakora is only good at getting the ball back after he has given it away. In Huddlestone we have a player who can dictate the pace of the game with his passing but he appears to lack the mentality and fitness for it. Give Ramos time to work on him and as long as his drive is there he can become as good as he choses to be. A little bit of Roy Keane in him would be nice! Last few seasons we have struggled to keep possession and times and leave our defenders exposed and Ramos has addressed this by clearing out some of the culprits from last few seasons and brought in players who are comfortable on the ball. Other than that I think we are looking ok for new season. Ramos is shrewd in the transfer market and given time he could well be the man to finally break us into the top four. This season will be to early and top 7 and poss another cup would be a great season. Come on the Spurs

I was gutted when Keane left as I thought he was our best player but after the initial shock I think that Spurs have done an excellent piece of fund raising. Keane is 28 and for a player that relies on pace and quickness of feet there aren't going to be that many more 20+ goals a season left in him. Would we still get £20 million for him when he is 30? I don't think so. I think that his sale will help us bring in new younger players such as Villa and Ashavin who have proven that they can do the job at the highest level. If we get these two then, along with Modric, we will have the 3 best players from the Euros. COYS.

Outside of the top 4 clubs, I'am not particularly worried about anyone else to be honest. The quality isn't that great and the likes of Villa, Everton and Man City fail to excite. It HAS to be a transitional season for Tottenham given the amount of changes but I would still not be suprised to see them back in 5th spot next season. As I said, outside the top 4, the quality is not there and 5th place is achievable. Another cup win would be fantastic and I would be more than happy with that. The top 4 have it sewn up in the League next season, but give Juande Ramos time and I'am quite certain he can break their little monopoly. Spurs look to be the most ambitious outside the top 4 and I expect them to achieve Champions League football within 2-3 seasons. Villa and Everton cannoty attract the extra quality needed to make another step up(they rely on workmanlike, limited players...IE-Sidwell)City will never have stability with Shinawatra, Newcastle are way behind. The only side I would say have an outside chance is Pompey, where Redknapp is building a pretty hadny Premiership squad. Thats a LOOOOONG shot though.

It is all looking great for this season but lets not get carried away. we have seen so many false dawns in the past. Tottenham are a great side for bring on young talent but the the big clubs come in and take them leaving us little chance of breaking into the top 4. If we are to keep our talent we must make an immediate impact and start winning or they will see their future elsewhere. It is not only about the fans giving the managaer and players time, it is also about the players be patient and not wanting to jump ship to one of the other clubs as soon as it gets a bit tough. I just want to thank Keno for his years of service and hope HE does well and that we knock seven bells out of the prentenders to the crown.

Bentley, Modric, Dos Santos ... all class acts ... do we really need Arshavin? Im not sure that we need to splash out much more on the attacking side, we do have 2 recognized strikers in Berba and Bent but preseason (and Mr Roberts) suggest we will play one up top. I feel if we do need to strengthen its in the centre of defence, this has been a major pitfall and often we have come unstuck. Im not totally confident Ledley and Woodgate will be fit for the whole season, and if that is the case then we have Dawson (good player, but prone to mistakes), Rocha (poor signing), Zokora and Huddlestone (both out of position). That is my only concern. Am also glad with the clearing of players (all but Keane), but i feel the job is half done, Rocha, Stalteri have got to go for sure. Major question marks over Zokora, and Lennon (end product???, exciting player and love watching him, but very frustrating, plus we have Bentley now). Keep a strong core squad of 16-18 and encourage the youngsters like Gunter, Bostock, O'Hara, Rose, Pekhart.

I don't think Spurs will be a surprise package next season- I think they'll have a decent start but will begin to falter towards Christmas. If you look at Man City last season, the new players performed excellently together at the start, however as soon as you have a team scenario where all the players are new and can't even communicate adequately, their form drops because they don't care about the club much and they become fatigued. That isn't their fault- how can they get a feel for a club after just half a season?! Don't get me wrong, I still believe that selling the players they have has been the right thing to do- Chimbonda, Malbranque and Tainio are good players but not great players, and Keane forced their hand by making a transfer request. Modric, Bentley and Dos Santos are excellent young players, whilst Gomes is experienced and proven in the Champions League. I would say that acquiring wide players is vital- Lennon is just too weak and his crossing is sub-standard. Spurs should go for Quaresma, Santi Cazorla, Guardado, Joaquin, David Silva, Diego Capel or Thiago Neves; any young winger with strength, pace and crossing ability- but I think they're covered on the left because Gareth Bale is a very good player. If Berbatov goes, then Oscar Cardozo should be the top target followed by Diego Milito, Nicola Zigic or, God forbid, Dean Ashton. Spurs fans must be patient, I can't stress that enough: of course some very good players have been bought but Ramos hasn't cultivated his team yet, he's only just putting it together. Next season will be a learning experience without success: no UEFA cup, FA Cup or League Cup I'm afraid, but I do see Tottenham winning at least one of those in the next four years. Good luck!

I disagree a little on the changes required, I don't rate Zokora at all and we need a major upgrade here, Veloso would be great but at this stage I won't be too fussy. Also a back-up CB for King and Woody and I think we can already challenge top 4, without these and I think we'll struggle as the goals will continue to be conceded.

I have admired Ramos ever since he was in Seville. He had turned things around for the spurs and it seems that you will indeed have a promising season. I totally agree with Mark Norris on the names that should depart the lane (Berbatov, Rocha, Stalteri) yet you might still need to retain Young-Pyo service. King+Woodgate are a fantastic tandem, but Ramos should worry about King's fittness among the whole season, in spite that he had been injury-prone for a while. I thought that Ramos should sign an experienced defender, since you have European football to entertain as well. Bent indeed is an over-rated striker, and I think the only reason he will stay is because no real offers were made for him. A defender, Arshavin and Pavlyochenko would see the spurs form a real threat to the top 4. I can't wait to watch the next derby. Yet, I wish you Spurs -under leadership of Ramos- all the best
