Former Aston Villa and Newcastle midfielder Nolberto Solano has joined Colchester, according to Peruvian club Universitario.

The 35-year-old, who also played for West Ham, has been training with the Us and manager Aidy Boothroyd did not rule out the possibility of offering a contract.

A deal now appears to have been reached, with Universitario boss German Leguia stating that the 95-time Peru international wants to be closer to his Europe-based family.

"This opportunity was extraordinary for Solano because playing in England he will have the chance to be near his children, who are living in Greece with their mother," Leguia told Agencia Andina.

A statement from the board of Universitario read: "We wish Solano very good luck at Colchester and that he has success in the same way that he had at Universitario."
