Velez Sarsfield have warned Wigan they will be reported to Fifa if they push through a deal for Waldo Ponce.

The Chilean defender looks set to complete a switch to the DW Stadium before the end of the January transfer window, against the wishes of his current employers.

The 27-year-old, who has been accused of going AWOL, believes he is free to seal a switch to England.

However, Velez insist they have not sanctioned a move and have made it clear that they will look to take action against the Latics if they proceed with their efforts to land Ponce.

Club president Fernando Raffaini said: "If Ponce signs a contract with Wigan, we are going to forbid the transfer and report Wigan to Fifa.

"We have already ordered Ponce to show up here and attend training sessions with his team-mates, but he never made any reply to us."

Ponce, meanwhile, has reiterated his desire to complete a transfer before the winter window slams shut.

"What is left in my career is to play in Europe," he said,

"I think this is the right moment for moving."
