Penarol president Edgar Welker has denied that Christian Vieri is on his way to the club.

The Uruguayan champions have been strongly linked with a move for the veteran former Italy striker, who has been without a club for the past year.

Vieri is vastly experienced, winning 49 caps for his country, but Welker insists that the reports have no substance.

"We didn't think at all in any moment of bringing Vieri to Penarol," he told Sport 890..

"There isn't any negotiation at all, there are proposals, but we understand that we have more important things to resolve in this moment so we are not thinking of Vieri at all.

"At the moment we only have in our minds the preparation of the friendly match against Real Madrid.

"We didn't think in any moment about the chance of hiring Vieri, that's the only truth."
