Manchester United youngster Danny Welbeck has been targeted for international recognition by Ghana.

Welbeck scored on his Premier League debut for the Red Devils with a spectacular long-range effort in the 5-0 thrashing of Stoke at Old Trafford.

The teenage forward, who will celebrate his 18th birthday on 26th November, is already a member of the England Under 19 side.

But Ghana are hopeful he will switch allegiance to the Black Stars, who he qualifies to play for through his parents.

Encouraging

Ghana FA spokesman Randy Abbey claimed that discussions had already taken place and is hopeful Welbeck will elect to represent the Africans.

"The GFA president has been in constant talks with his family, and the response is quite encouraging," Abbey told GNA Sports.

"There is still much to be cleared with respect to the player's career development and gaining a regular place in the Manchester United first team.

"But we are very sure that when the time is due for the player to make a national team choice, it will be the Black Stars."

And Ghana FA vice-president Fred Pappoe added in The Sun: "We'll pursue this."
