Paul Le Guen has been appointed as the new manager of Cameroon with the hope of turning around the fortunes of the troubled country.

The Frenchman becomes their third manager in just two months, succeeding former Cameroon international Thomas Nkono who took over from German Otto Pfister after his resignation in May.

The 45-year-old has most notably led Lyon to three consecutive titles before a less successful spell at Rangers in 2006.

Le Guen managed Paris Saint Germain last season but was told in May that the club would not be offering him a new contract.

"Paul Le Guen will sign a six-month contract with the Cameroon government to coach the national team," state radio reported in the African country.

"His main mission will be to qualify the Indomitable Lions for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa."

Cameroon currently sit bottom of their World Cup qualification group with one point from only two games.

Le Guen's first qualifier will be against group leaders Gabon away on 5th September.
