Chelsea team-mates Didier Drogba and Michael Essien and Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o have been nominated for the 2009 African Footballer of the Year award.

All three helped their respective countries to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa later in the year and have been in excellent form for their clubs.

Essien was nominated for the award last year but Manchester City and Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor came out on top on that occasion.

Meanwhile, Algeria, Ivory Coast and Ghana were announced as nominees for the African National Team of the Year.

All three will play in the 2010 World Cup, with Algeria reaching the finals in great drama after a fierce play-off against rivals Egypt.

The winners of the awards will be announced in Accra, Ghana, on 11th March.
