Algeria have announced that coach Rabah Saadane has quit his role as coach of the national team.

Saadane was in his fifth spell as manager and led the Algerians to this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.

However they finished bottom of Group C despite getting a creditable goalless draw with England in the second game, culminating in a final minute 1-0 defeat to USA in the final match.

Saadane stayed on as coach of the Desert Foxes following the tournament, but their qualification for the 2012 African Cup of Nations began poorly with a 1-1 draw with Tanzania on Friday, resulting in the 64-year-old's resignation.

"Mr Rabah Saadane on Saturday resigned from his post as coach of the national team," a statement of the Algerian Football Assocation's official website read.

"Mr Saadane's decision has been accepted by the president of the Algerian Football Federation (Mohamed Raouraoua), who thanked and paid tribute to his excellent work."
