Alex Dunn would rather take a bath with a toaster than write another Gareth Barry story, but whether Villa start next season with or without their wantaway star, he predicts bright times ahead in the Midlands in the latest in our Shaping up for the Season feature.

What's happened so far

In these disturbing times of modern slavery, Gareth Barry is one of the more high-profile footballers to be incarcerated against his will.

Barry's purported switch to Liverpool has rivalled Cristiano Ronaldo's to Real Madrid, at least in terms of stirring the nausea in every supporter that has long-since grown exasperated by the notion contracts matter nowt. Fifa's king Blatter has gone all Martin Luther in his exclamations over players' rights but while the rest of the football world arches an eyebrow in disdain, the fact remains that in all likelihood Villa will be left with a sizeable void to fill in the centre of their midfield next season.

It would do a disservice to both the first-class job Martin O'Neill has done in his two years at the club and Randy Lerner's exemplary chairmanship to suggest Villa will falter alarmingly in Barry's absence, but the England man, it cannot be denied, was a key player in massive strides being taken last term.

Steve Sidwell has been plucked from Chelsea's bench for a £5million fee that should prove good value, just as soon as he regains the confidence borne from playing under a manager that believes in him. After a frustrating time in West London, Sidwell will benefit greatly from the sharp but avuncular O'Neill; the master at using both carrot and stick to coax the best from his charges.

Patrik Berger, in a Gerard Ratner moment, sealed his exit by publicly expressing the virtues of Anfield to Barry. Curtis Davies meanwhile has earned a permanent move to the club from West Brom.

While Barry will likely depart for Liverpool under a cloud, Olof Mellberg's move to Juventus manifest a polar opposite of a response. There was not a dry eye in the house as Mellberg played his final game in claret and blue at Upton Park, before the Swede restored faith in the football fraternity by shelling out £50,000 of his own cash to present the 3,200 travelling Villa supporters with a signed replica shirt.

What they need

His class off the pitch will be equally missed on it, with Villa now desperate for a new right-back. Mellberg is a central defender by trade and while he did an admiral job in moving sideways to accommodate Davies' blossoming partnership with Martin Laursen, the Scandinavian lacked verve in an attacking sense.

Steve Finnan has been mooted as a makeweight in the Barry deal and should Liverpool agree to Villa's valuation of a miserly million, O'Neill will have pulled off quite a coup. The unassuming Irishman evokes memories of compatriot Dennis Irwin in that he never seems to really make a tackle but then never really gets beaten either. Solid, dependable if unspectacular, neat and tidy - sounds like the ideal defender to me.

Should Finnan not arrive at Villa Park then O'Neill - who was a fan of Porto's Jose Boswinga before Chelsea stumped up yet another astronomical amount for a full-back - could send his scouts back out to Portugal. Benfica's buccaneering Nelson is thought to be on the club's radar, as is Valencia's Miguel, another Portuguese international.

Wilfred Bouma is firmly established as O'Neill's first choice left-back, while Davies (once his ruptured Achilles mends) and likely new skipper Laursen are as good a central defensive pairing as any outside of the top four. That said, Gary Cahill's defection to Bolton in January leaves them a little shy of cover in what is the Premier League's smallest squad.

Anton Ferdinand has been mooted as a possible target but with a fee of £8million having reportedly been put on his head, all I can say is that I'm glad it's not my money.

Last season Scott Carson kept goal impressively on a season-long loan from Liverpool but O'Neill, who thankfully for Lerner does spend money likes it's his own, baulked at a £10million fee. Stuart Taylor will be desperate to prove himself after spending the whole of his career as a number two but Villa will undoubtedly invest in new blood.

Brad Guzan was primed for a January move from the MLS before the Home Office rejected his application for a work permit, but he has figured in four of America's last five games and will likely be greeted with a more favourable now Villa have renewed their interest.

Ben Foster has been linked with a Midlands move along the same lines as Carson last term but the England hopeful will be quietly confident of ousting Edwin van der Sar by the season's end and thus a move to Villa will not likely appeal. O'Neill is well aware of Artur Boruc's ability but again it would take a noticeable fee to tempt Gordon Strachan into a sale.

Brad Friedel's future at Blackburn has been cast into doubt by Paul Ince's reported pursuit of Carlo Cudicini - who would not swap a bench down south for one up north - and if indeed the American is usurped, then a switch to Villa may suit all parties.

Further up the pitch, Sidwell will provide bite and drive if cast as Barry's direct replacement but then so does Nigel Reo-Coker. Midfield duos do not necessarily have to be chalk and cheese but then few people ask for a cheese and cheese sandwich. Reo-Coker impressed in a holding role last term and showed impressive maturity in his discipline but it could be that the shackles are cast off next season. O'Neill may hand him licence to roam, as Stilian Petrov has also shown an inclination to drop deeper and deeper as the years pass.

Villa's front three of Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew are exhilarating to watch when in full flow, but in games when the opposition defend deep and stifle counter-attacks, it becomes obvious a creative spark from midfield is conspicuous only by absence. O'Neill is known to covet David Bentley but the player is said to favour a move to Tottenham.

Villa will compete with Liverpool for James Milner should Newcastle intimate an approach would be welcomed and the powerful wide man would fit into O'Neill's mantra of buying British.

Carew has shown a real relish for the physical nature of English football but should the Norwegian pick up an injury, or Villa want to revert to a front two, again options are limited. Marlon Harewood has shown remarkable patience in biting his lip before impressing off the bench, but has been linked with a move in pursuit of regular football.

Shaun Maloney is another to have been reduced to a bit-part player role and having made no secret of his homesickness, a move back to Celtic would surprise few. Eidur Gudjohnsen's astuteness with his back to goal would complement the explosive but at times raw Agonlahour and Young, but his father and agent has said his son would prefer a move to either London or Manchester.

Darren Bent has been tentatively linked but then in a tabloid world, every player that interests the likes of West Ham, Everton, Sunderland and Newcastle - tends to interest Villa too.

What he'll get

It's fair to say O'Neill prefers to work with an ensemble cast rather than build his vision around a box-office star, so don't expect jaw-dropping market movements from the Ulsterman. Since arriving at Villa Park a buy British policy has reaped deep dividends, with Reo-Coker, Young and Davies all having caught the eye under his tutelage.

A right-back and a goalkeeper are a must, with Rafa Benitez's seeming willingness to sacrifice Finnan as part of the Barry transfer making him the prime contender to replace Mellberg, while Guzan should be unveiled before too long.

A midfielder with a touch of craft would be welcomed by the Villa faithful, as would another striker and O'Neill will be well aware the avoidance of major injuries last season - with the exception of Davies - papered over what is a talented but wafer-thin squad.

He is not, though, a man to be hurried or bullied and could even sign the odd player that elicits a groan, before at the end of the season we mere hacks and supporters resign ourselves to the fact Martin normally knows best.

Fan's view - Andy Roberts

With Martin O'Neill and Randy Lerner at the helm, we are a club that has changed out of all recognition in the two seasons. The continued refurbishment of Villa Park along with strong season ticket sales and the willingness to consult the fans prove we are certainly going in the right direction off the pitch.

The club's activity in the transfer market may well be the acid test of whether they can build on the progress shown on it with O'Neill's brand of pacey, attacking football allied with highly effective use of dead ball situations.

We have been linked with great deal of players since the end of the season but with the exception of Steve Sidwell, actual signings are yet to materialise. This has left some Villa fans questioning just how the club can take the next step and try to break the stranglehold of the so-called 'Big Four'.

Is the prospect of Intertoto Cup, then hopefully Uefa Cup football, enough to attract the best players? Are we always destined to lose out to Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool when it comes to signing top class talent? Are a decent number of players coming in to bolster an alarmingly shrinking squad and enable the team to deal with the new substitution rules - or will more academy youngsters be getting chances sooner rather than later?

Of course alongside all of those questions the hot topic over last few months has been the ongoing saga over the future of Gareth Barry.

Us fans felt very disappointed when it was finally confirmed that our skipper had spoken to O'Neill about his craving for Champions League football away from Villa Park. Is that not what the club is allegedly striving for as well? If Martin is unable to persuade his captain marvel that he will eventually play Champions League football at Villa Park, then can the fans believe it themselves?

Only time will tell whether we will see Barry playing in Europe in a (nice new Acorns hospice-sponsored) Villa shirt or warming a European bench sporting a Liverpool tracksuit.

We have concluded a deal for Sidwell from Chelsea but still need at least another creative midfielder with a range of passing.

A long term concern has been our failure to find players for the right side of defence. It was a position manfully taken on last season by the bearded - and now sadly departed - Olof Mellberg. Though not his favoured position, the versatile Swede took on the bulk of duties at right back along with local product Craig Gardener and perhaps more worryingly, Nigel Reo-Coker.

O'Neill lost out on supposed long-term target Jose Bosingwa to Chelsea, but it has been reported that Villa have looked at his Portuguese team-mate Miguel who has made no secret of his desire to leave Valencia. Sporting Braga's João Pereira could be the cut-price option or to round off the Portuguese runners, Benfica's Nelson has also previously been on the radar. Whether they are Portuguese or not, Villa just need a confirmed right back - and more probably two.

We also look a little short on the other side of the pitch. The unsung Dutch international Freddie Bouma did a good job at left back and was an ever-present in 2007/8 before going on to help Marco van Basten's Oranje reach the Euro 2008 Quarter Finals. If another left back does not materialise, Freddie had better enjoy a relaxing holiday, return fresh and remain injury-free as his young understudy Stephen O'Halloran returned early in May from loan at Leeds United with cruciate ligament injury.

I think most Villa fans were not entirely convinced about Scott Carson but with Thomas Sorenson's Villa career finished and Stuart Taylor seemingly just an able deputy, a top quality goalkeeper is a must for the shopping list too.

Ok so Brummies like an occasional whinge, but not even the most pessimistic Villa fan could moan about the team's exciting attacking options up front. Gabby and Ashley along with big John Carew netted 32 goals between them last season and some were simply brilliant.

Marlon 'The Hare' Harewood really won over the fans with some impressive cameo super-sub appearances in the second half of the season and with Nathan Delfouneso earning a squad number, Villa also have the prospect of introducing yet another exciting product off the academy production line.

Would it be greedy to ask for another top class striker and attack-minded midfielder? Certainly not! Roque Santa Cruz certainly falls into the former category but is an unlikely arrival, though he would find a much better reception than the ex-Birmingham City duo of Emile Heskey and Andy Johnson that have been linked with Villa. A decisive move for his team-mate David Bentley would certainly signal intent on the latter, though competition for his signature will be fierce a so maybe James Milner would be welcomed back to Villa Park.

Despite an alleged liking for taking time to weigh up his transfer decisions, Martin does not have that luxury on this occasion. The clock is ticking inexorably down to the club's first Intertoto Cup fixture on July 19th. With that potential route into the Uefa Cup a serious consideration, fans should not have to wait long before they see whether Aston Villa really are going to start making life uncomfortable for that Premier League top four.

Marvellous article. I believe Aston villa should purchase Miguel from valencia after spending some time in Spain myself i have seen his potential i do not think he is a world beater but could certainly help the team next season. I would also like to see this young Getafe midfeilder,De La Red he is a bright young player with flare which is certainly needed after Steve Sidwell's performance against Odense 1st and 2nd leg. Another fine addition to the squad would be David bently. I would like to see him with Ashley Young down Villa Park this season. I do beleive we need another centre half i hear Kabooul is intrested in a move to Villa Park i think he is a much better player than Zat Knight. Aston Villa have missed an out and out goal scorer since the days of Juan Pablo Angel i think we do need a regualr goal scorer this season may i suggest the bright Real mallocra striker Jonas Gutierrez. With these addtions im sure Aston villa football club can finish in the top 4 this season.

I have to say that we, Villa, have not set the transfer world a light with our purchases in the last few seasons. But we are on the up and advancing. I have total faith in MON he is the best manager we have had in many years and he knows what he is doing and will not waste money on over priced players. Some suggest we have no money but that's simply not the case we just do not waste it. Under Martin's guidance with a few additions which will still come to fruition I think we may surprise people again and I do firmly believe that if one of the top four do not perform we will be there replacing them.

Some people obviously didn't attend many Villa games last season. If we would have bought Scott Carson we would have the worst keeper in the premiership, im glad he's gone to Albion. We shouldn't be buying these cast off's from other teams, we need to be the team linked with these high profile players, not with Stephen Carr or Paul Robinson. Shaun Maloney also needs to be playing more regular, he has the best goals to games ratio in the team and is electric when he gets the ball. And to the Liverpool fan at the top of the comments, Arshavin really aint that good, he had a poor Euro and although he won the Russian league and the UEFA cup, he lacks consistency and the power to make it in the Premier league. Im also frustrated and bored of this protracted Barry transfer saga. Tottenham have reported MUFC and unsurprisingly LFC for breaches in the conduct of their interest for certain players. I believe we have suffered a lot more than THFC through breaches in transfer conduct. Benitez has often voiced his interest in barry in many unorthadox ways, to say politely. Also, Master Gerrard had quite the outburst when voicing his admiration for Barry. One thing is for certain, Barry can expect a hostile reception upon visiting Villa Park for whichever team he plays for.

A very good article, well balanced and written. I'm not overly concerned about the lack new signings at the moment. MON said he will bolster the squad this season, he seems to be a man of his word, so why would I not believe him ! However. I am sick of listening to Liverpool fans moan on about the Barry saga. They seem to think that we should just give our players away. this coming from a club that not only have tapped up Barry, but asked £10m for Carson, and sold him foe £4m and £15m for Crouch and sold him for £11m. And then they have the cheek to suggest that we have overpriced Barry ? Liverpool fans need to get real, they are not the club they where. They also don't have the class on or off the field which they used to. Villa will run them close this season.

Adrian Newman (Aston Villa fan) says...

Mr Aziz, it seems as if your thoughts on Barry are slightyly different to that of Benitez and Capello - but what do they know?. However, I do agree with you about the price tag - I think in the current transfer market he would be reasonable value at £14/£15m. I also believe that if Benitez conducted his business privately and professionally Barry would be training alongside Gerrard as we speak. If Villa do lose Barry, it would be dissapointing but not tragic - with players such as Bentley on the radar I would be happy with a midfield that consists of Young, Sidwell, Reo-coker, Bentley, Petrov and couple of younsters to cover. Although it is not ideal to lose your captain, we have other players that can take the helm and drive us forward just as well - unlike other clubs who solely rely on their captain. Regardless of what happens, Liverpool and Villa have healthy futures and will bring a new fight to the league this year. Bring on the Season.

I enjoyed Alex Dunn's article and most of the fan's responses were positive and well written too.. . However, as a Villa fan, I am finding it extremely difficult to stay positive. We keep hearing the same things coming from MON "we working hard on bringing new players to the club" etc... But I can't help thinking that MON's tactics in luring and actually signing players must be too "old school". What I mean is that MON has to pay big money for quality...it seems that he's being too cautious (about spending too much). Like some of the responses above, I am sick of hearing that we've got the smallest squad in the prem...we have to buy and buy now! The longer we wait, the more the prices (for players) will go up and the likelihood of players switching clubs after 4-5 weeks pre-season/training with their clubs will decrease alarmingly. GK Guzan & Green Defenders Hoyte, Mattock, Stearman, Ferdinand & Shorey Midfielders Bentley, Wright-Phillips, Johnson Strikers Darren Bent Mostly young English players, mostly quality... Now...make it happen MON and Mr Lerner!!! Up the Villa!

Abdul Aziz (Liverpool fan) says...

Martin O neil has NO money to spend. Its obvious. He made a gamble and demanded over the odds for Gareth Barry. Reason is simple because he has no money and hopes to use the transfer from Gareth Barry to fund his transfer targets. But the gamble has failed this time, I hope atleast. Certainly I hope that Liverpool are not that dumb enough to pay so much for a older player who hasn't proven anything in international level and won nothing in the leagues. Yes, Barry is a good player but he's not Ronaldinho or Arshavin. Even Ronaldinho did not cost that much for Milan. Really hope Rick Parry is not dumb enough to pay what Villa is asking bcos Parry usually has a poor transfer record. I rather LFC use that money to bid for Zenith's Arshavin who can play as a forward, creative midfielder and also winger. O'Niel cmon do you really think Barry is worth that much? He's really good but he has accomplished nothing! If he had been in LFC he would be a world star but unfortunately he's rotting in Villa. Barry has O'Niell and Villa to thank now for destroying his soccer career

Buy RYAN NELSON. Ok so I'm a bit biased, but he's damn good. Just ask Blackburn's fans. And I agree buy Bentley and co. before someone else does.

Jon Fennelly (Manchester United fan) says...

"Midfield duos do not necessarily have to be chalk and cheese but then few people ask for a cheese and cheese sandwich." Well I don't now about you but I've never asked for a chalk and cheese sandwich..! I think Villa can certainly push on this year and present more of a challenge to the top 4, if not quite breaking into that select group. I am wondering why Martin O'Neill was quoted 10 million for Carson when Stoke agreed a 4 million fee? As a United fan, I would love to see Ben Foster at Villa for a season. Would be a valuable first team experience and working with MO'N can only be beneficial for when he returns as our Number One for 2009-2010. I think Sidwell is a good capture. Chelsea was the wrong move at the wrong time for him, but I think he has the potential to be one of the stars of the coming season. I am excited as a neutral and England fan, to see how Young and Agbonlahor fare. I think the right (or left, freeing up Joe Cole, as England most technical and creative player, (pains me to say that as a United fan!) to play a free role) side of midfield could be Young's this season if he performs consistently for Villa. As for a right back, maybe a cheeky bid for someone like Glenn Johnson or even Paolo Ferreira, whose days at Chelsea are surely numbered. I agree with Tristian that you should also go for someone like Milner or Lennon. Lennon though, I feel, likes the bright lights of London too much, and someone like SWP, as demonstrated by Wayne Bridge, would be happy to sit on the bench for an astronomical salary.

I agree Villa do need strength in depth but i remember arsenal played villa last season and in the first game we walked the first half but in the second we were completely outplayed and in the return fixture bendtner rescued a point with a minute to go. so i feel villa are not too far from the 'big four'. they are hard to play against and i enjoy their attacking play i look forward to seeing how they fare out next season

James Kelly (Aston Villa fan) says...

Top article, i would say this was written by a villa supporter as apart from Scott Carson's performance in goal last season it was a spot on viewpoint of where we currently stand in proceedings. I personally believe this is season is about consolidation of our current position in 6th as that was a massive achievement for team and fans. Villa park is becoming a fortress again with most games towards a sell out. I still believe the squad needs heavy reinforcements as to counteract our one dimensional play highlighted when playing at home and our squad depth, or lack of it. I believe signing Guzan and Friedal would be a masterstroke as Taylor is not up to 1st choice and the American connection would surely assist in adjusting to premiership life. I believe Finnan and £17 million for Barry would be a fantastic bit of business seeing as Barry's consistantly high level of performance has coincided with O'neill arriving at the club. As much as it pains me to say i still dont think we will attract bentley over the likes of spurs or liverpool, although to suggest he will have more success at these clubs over the coming seasons remains to be seen. Meanwhile another striker is a must, although i cannot see who we are going to bring in to make our most devestating area of the pitch more threatening. An alternative option to Carew would be fitting but i do not expect big money to be invested in this area of the pitch. A new centre back and a midfielder also would be useful.

Malc Hughes (Aston Villa fan) says...

Good and fair article. We certainly need to strengthen, what worries me is will we? I for one am a little sick of the statement of having the smallest squad in the PL being used. When MON arrived we had the smallest squad, we know because he told us so, he had little time to address that in his first season. At the start of last season (and finish) we were still in the same position, yet MON had all summer to address it. We started the season without a single right back, being told quality is worth waiting for, well we are still waiting, this guy whoever he is must be fantastic! MON needs to act now, and learn from his own lesson, he's holding out for £18m for Barry, so if Blackburn rate Bentley at £17m, pay it, before spurs do. The same with your other target, make fair and reasonable offers for your targets and get them in now, if the offers are turned down, move on to the next, but act quickly. MON says we did not see the best from some signing last year because they didn't have a pre-season, well we don't want to have to wait another year to see the best of this years signing, so best get a wriggle on eh!

I agree, David, we definitely need 6 or 7 more players but we have a couple of very promising players who didn't feature last season. Delfouneso, Salifou, Bannon and O'Halloran back from injury. I know we need strength in depth and we need to gradually blood these players, however.

David Sandford (Aston Villa fan) says...

I think we need to buy more than just three or four players, we have lost 3 and before that we had the smallest squad, we need 6 or 7 players. Strength in depth, we have hopefully got alot more games to play this season in the uefa cup, so we need squad players. Yes get another goalie, yes get a right back, right winger, bring more kids from the academy and other teams in for every position to get a bit of competition for places. We were lucky last season, we didn't have many injuries, if we do this season, we may not do very well, remembering that we had no cup runs at all last season.

Villa on the up. Last season was a quality one with such a small number of players being used. Well done the lads. I think the Barry saga needs sorting pretty quick. This i feel is gonna have a knock on effect on the rest of the team, with him only just joining the training. Let him go on next offer, or don't sell him at all. Bentley would fit right into the line up. Last season all teams got used to the aim for Young balls played all game. To have an attacking threat on both sides of the pitch will stretch more teams. all areas of the pitch need backing up with the money there to spend we need to challenge some of the big 4 in the sigining of new players. We may have the smallest squad in the Prem but we have the best 12th man in the "crowd". Sidwell is a great signing, some more grit in the centre of the park. No setting sites to high but a top 6 finish and a run in europe would surely see some more talent moving towards Villa Park. Martin has my backing all the way. Best man for the job in over 30 years. Come on the Villa!!!!!!!!!!!!

John Steele (Aston Villa fan) says...

I think, when you consider that Villa fans were less than optimistic with the lack of transfer activitiy last summer, that we can trust MON. He comes across as a softly spoken tactician but his dealings with the annoying Gareth Barry saga has proved he's a formidable and immoveable opponent. We're all disappointed in Gareth. We all despise the way, through blatantly ill advise, he went to a Sunday Paper and slagged off his manager. Even if Martin O'Neill had been apathetic about his future, that is completely unprofessional. The fact that O'Neill was the one to give him the free role that accentuated his talents for a watching English manager makes it doubly bad. I don't think any Villa fan really wants to see Barry in a Villa shirt again. Quality player? Yes. Irreplaceable? No. Quality person? unlikely, given the evidence. Right back is a problem and I think getting Finnan would be massive for us. He is understated but his attacking sensibilities are perfect for Villa. How many goals would Crouch have scored for the Pool if it wasn't for Finnan crosses? Another player whose future is undecided is Alonso and, should they not find a suitable club for him, why don't Liverpool just offer him, Finnan, Carragher and £10M for Barry? All jokes aside, we do need a proven centre half, a creative midfielder and a striker.

Im a season ticket holder at the villa home and away i cant wait for the new season, after finishing 11th then 6th last season now we have to kick on we have made great progress under martin o neill he is definatly the man to take us into the champions league this season or season after gradual progress we need this season in the uefa cup to gear us up ready for the champions league we need 2 or 3 big signings before the big kick off i would love a creative midfielder like bentley, and some players maybe from foster, hoyte, bent, lennon, ferdinand, we should of got defoe that was a mistake. robbier keane would be the best signing ever oh well all us villa fans r proper optimistic for the new season come on the villa boys were all goin on a european tour !!!!
