Mowbray: Looking to strengthen squad in close season
It has been a busy summer at The Hawthorns so far, with West Brom boss Tony Mowbray preparing his battle-plan for Premier League survival. In the latest in our Shaping up for the Season series, Simon Wilkes takes an in-depth look at what they'll need to survive in the top tier.
The Baggies have become something of a yo-yo club in recent seasons, constantly proving they're too good for the Championship and not quite up to the Premier League.
They enjoyed top-flight campaigns in 2002-03, 2004-05 and 2005-06 but suffered relegation in two of the three seasons, pulling off a final-day 'Great Escape' under Bryan Robson in 2005, only to fall back into England's second tier the following season.
Gary Megson transformed the club during a successful spell in the Hawthorns hot-seat, but was found out tactically when doing battle with the likes of Messrs Ferguson and Wenger - as did United legend Robson.
Times have changed, though, and the Baggies are now ready to establish themselves in the Premier League thanks to Tony Mowbray.
The former Middlesbrough centre-back arrived in the Black Country with a reputation for producing flowing football, having transformed Hibernian into a genuine rival for the Old Firm giants.
Mowbray was a commanding physical presence on the pitch, but is intelligent, astute and calm off it - and demands his teams stick to his attacking principles at all times.
That outlook was rewarded last season as the Baggies responded to losing the 2006-07 play-off final to Derby at Wembley by winning the Championship title in 2007-08 and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals, scoring over 100 goals in all competitions along the way.
Now the ultimate test will be to keep that attacking momentum going, as in recent seasons the likes of Watford and Sunderland have proved defensive resilience is not enough to stay up - you need to score goals.
Mowbray may have been a defender in his playing days, but has spent of his time recruiting forwards so far this summer. Strikers Luke Moore and Roman Bednar have arrived from Aston Villa and Hearts respectively for a combined £5.8million.
Veteran hitman Kevin Phillips failed to agree a new contract and joined Birmingham on a two-year deal, but although Mowbray also has Ishmael Miller, Craig Beattie, Sherjill MacDonald and Bartosz Slusarski fighting for forward roles, he is expected to sign another striker, with Shola Ameobi, Milan Baros and Louis Saha all linked to the club.
Beattie, MacDonald and Slusarski are expected to leave on season-long loans or permanent deals this summer.
Goalkeeper Scott Carson arrived on a permanent £3.25m move from Liverpool to push veteran Dean Kiely for the first-team jersey, while keeper Michel Danek and midfield playmaker Kim Do-Heon, who recently netted a hat-trick for South Korea, have had loan deals turned into permanent ones, and young winger Graham Dorrans is one for the future having signed from Livingston.
Mowbray did miss out on wideman Pat McCourt, though, after the Derry man turned his back on Albion in favour of a 'dream' move to Celtic.
And after seeing Martin Albrechtsen join Zoltan Gera (Fulham) and Phillips in leaving on free transfers, with the Dane heading to Derby, the Albion gaffer signed Dutch defender Gianni Zuiverloon for £3.2million from Heerenveen and left-back Marek Cech from Porto for £1.4m.
Hungary midfielder Gera's move to Fulham has created a huge void on Albion's right wing. Derby's Giles Barnes has been mentioned as a possible replacement, but it appears more likely that James Morrison will be first-choice on the right flank with Mowbray seemingly more interested in strengthening his central midfield options.
Swansea's Ferrie Bodde and Wigan's Michael Brown are on Albion's radar as Mowbray looks to add some bite to his midfield. The boss has always insisted he needs a balance of 'soldiers and artists' in his line-up, with the likes of Greening, Koren, Brunt, Teixeira and Morrison falling comfortably into the latter category.
Polish midfielder Radoslaw Majewski is also on Mowbray's wanted list, but his club Groclin Dyskobalia rate him in the £2million bracket, with Albion looking at a deal nearer to half that amount.
Mowbray's men scored goals for fun last season, but also shipped them at an alarming rate. Left-backs Paul Robinson and Neil Clement have played in the top flight before, but the rest of defence still needs serious strengthening despite the captures of Zuiverloon and Cech.
In defence, Bolton's Abdoulaye Meite and Charlton's Madjid Bougherra have emerged as Mowbray's top centre-back targets as Leon Barnett has bags of potential but may find the step up a stiff test.
Mowbray's interest in Ameobi has cooled but he still wants another striker, with Saha an outside option.
Meite and Bougherra are very likely to be wearing a Albion shirt at The Emirates on the opening day as they are both within the club's price range, but Song and Traore are more likely to stay with the Gunners.
A fantastic campaign and cup run has lifted expectations for a spirited season in the Premier League.
The promise of TV mega millions added to Curtis Davies' transfer and a theoretical profit on player sales last year has us hoping for miracles. Then the reality, before we've made any significant move in the transfer market, we lose Gera to a team many expect to see fighting for survival alongside us. A loss in many ways, out of contract and no fee involved which ultimately means we have to use some of our kitty just to restore the quality in the squad. However, in Mowbray we trust, the man is a legend already, a refreshing management style and a brand of football not seen for many years has us all feeling optimistic.
Many of us have muted the need for a holding midfielder as an option particularly away from home and Olofinjana is affordable, unproven, but we cant afford Makelele or Senna so we have to expect some unproven players at this level to be signed. Cattermole may represent a better target.
Also desperately needed are a tall dominant centre-back and a keeper who can handle high balls and set pieces. Sheff Wednesday's Mark Beevers would be my choice, but with all due respect 4 or 5 quality signings rather than 8 squad players is what I think will make the difference.
Hopefully Mowbray will convince some Premier League teams to lend us a bit of quality via season-long loans.
As a club we remain prudent and realistic, we have a manager capable of getting the best from his players, loyal fans who will fill the stadium this season and an expectation of survival. Whatever happens our target is the same, stay out of the bottom three and I predict a 16th-placed finish.

ok we all know we need a striker, centre mid and a decent cb, and could use a right wing. i do hope tony signs meite, decent legal fouling pedigree is vital in the prem, other options look pretty short, shittu was poor in prem, too slow, senderos and dawson just havent played enough and are lacking in confidence (maybe worth a gamble), maybe even trying for noe pamarot and take him from under hull's nose, or even kaboul from spurs?? altho he looks to be a miserable liability in any case we will seriously miss abrechtsen's pace against torres et al centre mid is a hard one, oli's gone to stoke, bodde looks unlikely and cattermole going to wigan but i hope that mr mobray will look at thomas gravesen who is unsettled at celtic either for loan or a cheap buy, if so a younger alternative might also be suitable, maybe joahan djourou on loan from arsenal, it was a shame to miss out on lee carsley from everton at the start of the window. we definately sign another striker, slusarski beattie are going, and macdonald will do us proud in the cup but will play a small role in the prem this season i feel, a pacey finisher would be nice,,, fraizer cambell had an excellent season with hull and with our "excellent links" with man u (brian robson left you twonk) we'll land him :P john utaka might be prized from pompey but at a price i think 8mill would be worth it tho for a player of his quality otherwise look abroad and go for pace Man U Chelsea Liverpool Tottenham Arsenal Everton Pompey Villa Man City West Ham Fulham Newcastle Blackburn Sunderland West Brom Bolton Wigan Middlesbrough Hull Stoke In fact im going to go make a bet

Chris Jones - Isn't Dean Windass more like 39, than 28? We definately need a good centre back and another powerful striker. Other than that we are looking pretty good with the signings that have been made. Up the Baggies!!

I think that we shall stay up this season. Mowbray is already a legend because of the flowing footballl that he has beleived in that comes with success. I feel he is totally right and im glad he is such a strong charachter that he sticks to his beleifs. Carson a class signing, personally i think cuz of the money. Its good to see we are getting some ace reputation to bring in high profile players. Ive heard kazim richards a possible replacement for gera. At 4m price tag could be too much. im not a major fan of giles barnes but he is a good player .. but good enough? i duno. Gera was a huge loss .. a true legend to use .. but the way he left was dissapointing .. but thats football and good luck to him .. he deserves it, the way he has always played for us. i think letting phillips go was a blow but i dnt no if he would of had that cutting edge to be a top goal scorer in the premier league. althouygh it is good now that more quality players can come in to replace him. Saha is class n would be a brilliant player for us. if i was looking for a centre back i would go searching for players like shittu, senderos (loan?) or even maybe dawson from spurs would be good for me. up to mowbray not me :P just hope we get a good replacement for gera ... good centre back .. meite id like to see. n i hope we get a good holding midfeilder (cattermole?) n striker :) .. i heard a croation guy was eager to come :S along with that a sell out with players like beattie, sluzarski, tininho. Pants in the prem ... good in champoinship though :) I think 11-16th finish .. Boing Boing :)

Awesome news that we have signed Scott Carson. He is a quality keeper and also still so young. I would love to see Louis Saha join us but I doubt he will, then again I never thought Kanu would join us so you never know! We need a dominant centre back now and a good holding midfielder because Pele just won't cut it at this level. I also reckon Luke Moore will come good this season. It's exciting stuff for us Baggies fans at the moment!

well now that we all know that carson has signed for the albion, is time to recruit a very good centre back to command things at the back. Completely agree with the article- zuiverloon is a talent but as yet untested, same goes for barnett. shittu maybe? same goes for a right flanker: giles barnes would be great. he's no gera but nevertheless he'd add some creative flair there. and whats this i hear about saha possibly?!? surely thats just conjecture. ameobi's far more likely. NO MILAN BAROS THOUGH. get those players plus the ones we already have and i think we might well stay up.

I honestly think Mowbray is the best manager West Brom have seen in their whole history. He in many ways reminds me of Wenger. Especially for his "Attacking style". Some great but cheap signings too, Texiera, Brunt, Koren, Moore, and Zuiverloon. One more today too... Scott Carson. An England international, he has been on two successful season long loan deals, and now has a place to call home. As for the interest in Milan Baros. Im not sure which way to go about it yet. If its for the right price then i say yes. But not for more than 5 or 6 mill

I have been a WBA supporter for the past few seasons and i see that this team is much better than the 2002 and 2005 teams that played in the Premier League.I dont think this team will be relegated this season. Its just one CB and 1 world class midfielder who is required to turn the fortunes of this club.I think it was best for the club that Phillips left and Luke Moore arrived providing pace. With Bednar signed up permanently and Ishmael Miller,i think this team will score goals as they did in the championship. Its just a little bit of luck and one top class midfielder which is required.Best of Luck.

Our defence has again been strengthened with the very experienced, yet young, Marek Cech arriving from FC Porto for a miniscule fee (£1.4 mill) in comparison to his record in the champions leage and Portugese league (3 consecutive championships). Also the major coup for Albion obviously being Scott Carson, England international, albeit under McClaren, for £3.25 he is a bargain if there ever was one! With PROVEN Premier League experience along eith Dean Kiely and the young Michael Danek, goalkeeping is no longer an issue. Defensively Zuiverloon is a dutch prodigee, with experience at Under-21 Level in the European Championships. Midfield may need bolstering, with a strong 'soldier' possibly needed, Cattermole may not be built like a tank but could be the link between Greening, Koren, Teixiera, Brunt, Morrison and Kim-Do-Heon. All have such flair and skill which is undenaible yet only Greening, Koren, and Morrison seem capable of tracking back and against the likes of Fabregas, Gerrard and Torres a strong holding midfielder is a necessity. Possible INS: Louis Saha - Wages may be out of our reach before possible takeover is completed Shola Ameobi - Mowbray cooled interest early in - non-starter Milan Baros - Again Non-starter, THAT FA Cup hand ball would have cemented him firmly in Mowbray's 'forget it' pile. NOW FOR THE POSSIBLES. Song, Traore - Both from an attack minded set up at Arsenal, Both on the fringes, a season-long loan would not harm either and may turn permanent as so many of our recent loan deals have done so. Their potential is undeniable and Wenger will certainly admire the set up at Albion to instill attacking football. Bodde - Possible. Shittu - Firm, tough tackeling, lacks alot of pace but could be useful at bringing down the opposition - lawfully bringing down though of course ;) Whatever happens, whoever we sign, it will still be an entertaining rollercoaster.

with the news just filters in that scott carson has signed a 4 year deal with us,expectations have gone up just a little. losing the likes of super kev who is a proven goal scorer in any league hes played in was unwanted news to many albion fans including me but we still have the fire power in roman bednar and ishmael miller and luke moore who scored a fair few for villa in limited appearences for them.all we need is another couple of players(proven midfielders and defenders)and we should be fine.have faith in tony mowbray with his attacking style.boing boing

attacking naievly will not work in the premier league! we still need a centre midfilder with some bite and 2 if not 3 strikers as mcdonald beattie and surawowki will definalty not cut it wwhislt miller and bednar will only just be up too the task!

2 weeks ago I was abit downhearted with the loss of Gera and Phillips, however with the signings of Cech and Carson Im back feeling upbeat and genuinely feel we can cement ourselves in the top flight. Mowbrays style will always be loved as its the way football is most entertaining win or lose. Lets hope the new lads fit in and we do ourselves justice as we have kept to bugets and principles as an honest club.

Your sir are a complete and utter moron. PLEASE research into a club before rambling on about things you have NO CLUE about and I qoute "Carson appears to want a permanent move from Anfield, putting him out of Albion's price range". Good job

scot carson will prove a good signing as we tended to defend set pieces too deeply last year due to kielys lack of height.not sure about morrison on the right flank , hope we go 4-5-1 with brunt wide left, miller on the right and texiera supporting bednar. koren to be star man in prem, think we will suprise teams by how much possesion we have....,spend rest of budget on a proven centre half

Tony Mowbray has brought back the old days to west brom and with his attacking style of play, i think we should have a better chance of competing for a mid table finish. Mowbray's signings so far havent got alot of Media attention but with Carson looking like he could either join us or Rovers the tea could be given a huge boost. I have every confidence that the squad we now have can compete with teams such as pompey, spurs, rovers, bolton and Boro, alothough it will be a had season, the players we have, have clearly shown their passion towards helping the club onto greater things. Bednar will be a key figure for us next season, the loss of phillips is a blow but i do have confidence that 1 of our other strikers such as Luke Moore or Craig Beattie can step up to the plate. As for players id like us to sign, the links with Saha, Foster and a vaige link with making a move for loaning in Denilson from Arsenal i cant rele think of many other players we shud try to sign. If it were up to me, i'd be bold and try to sign somebody like Vassell, Bellmey, Huddlestone or loan in players such as Armand Traore, Dong Fangzhuo, Fraizer campbell. CUMON U BAGGIE BOYZ!!!!
