Thommo's PL picks

Spurs will make top four - at Gunners' expense, says Phil

Last updated: 15th August 2008

It's a dangerous game, making pre-season predictions. But with just days to go before the big kick-off in the Premier League, the Soccer Saturday gang have gallantly agreed to put their necks - and their credibility - on the line.

Who will lift the Premier League trophy in May? Which manager has made the shrewdest buy? Who is most likely to do a Derby?

And which member of the panel has been hogging the sun-loungers all summer?

Read on as the finest pundits on the box use their encyclopaedic football knowledge to predict the new season's stars, strugglers and stragglers, as well as give each other some gentle ribbing!

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson thinks ahead to May 2009 ...

Champions

Manchester United. I think they've got the best all-round squad, especially if the signing of Berbatov goes ahead. He plays in a very similar way to Eric Cantona, although he doesn't have Cantona's drive and determination, and it would be interesting to see how the manager and the players accepted the tantrums and the sulkiness. But I think they've got the players to go the 38 games, plus the European and domestic cup matches.

Champions League spots

I've already said it on Sky Sports News but I do think this could be the year that someone breaks that top four. I've been very impressed with Spurs and I know that pre-season doesn't mean everything but Ramos' side has really started to take shape. He probably would have liked to have kept Robbie Keane but Darren Bent looks sharp. He seems to have shaken off what was possibly a bit of a star struck feeling, and with the speculation surrounding Berbatov, has started to enjoy taking on more responsibility. They've got a good balance and a good system with Modric, who's a fine player and Dos Santos on the left. I think Ramos has actually prepared for Berbatov's departure - we've seen him change tactics in pre-season and play 4-5-1, and it's looked very fluent. I think Arsenal's injuries and departures could mean they're the ones to fall out of the top four. I see Liverpool finishing in second and pushing Man United very close; Keane's come in and I think they'll have a stronger mentality. Width could be a problem if Pennant goes - I think he will - but I reckon Benitez might look to play a narrow three up front in Kuyt, Keane and Torres. I still think Gareth Barry will end up at Anfield, which would add a nice bit of 'Britishness' back to the squad - when the going gets tough the homegrown players seem to roll their sleeves up a bit more than some of the foreigners! Chelsea will be third for me; they're still a very good team, leaving Spurs to snatch fourth. But I think there will be much more of a fight at the top, which should make for a great season.

Fit for fifth

David Moyes has done a fantastic job but he's not been backed as yet and so I can't see Everton putting up a sustained challenge to the top four or five teams. Villa might stake a claim, Manchester City, Newcastle and West Ham have all spent but I don't see any of them having a say in the matter. So as I suggested earlier, I think Arsenal may have to settle for fifth. They have a young squad and they've been hampered by injuries to important players for the last couple of years. Van Persie has never played consistently since he's been at Arsenal and if they're going to make a title charge, they have to have him playing on a regular basis - the same goes for Thomas Rosicky. But there have been some destabilising undercurrents, too - the Adebayor saga and questions of was he being paid enough and do Arsenal pay enough, plus Cesc Fabregas saying that if they don't win anything this season, he might be looking to move on to somewhere like Real Madrid or Barcelona. Those sorts of things don't help the harmony in a club.

Surprise package

I'm tipping Aston Villa. Again, Martin O'Neill likes his 'Britishness', he likes his big man up front so he needs to keep John Carew fit. They have pace in Ashley Young, who had a really good season last time, and Agbonlahor, plus I think they have made a great signing in Carlos Cuellar from Rangers.

Going down

I think there'll be a lot down there but it will be between five: the three who have come up - Hull, Stoke and West Brom - plus Fulham, who I think will have another difficult season, and if I had to plump for another struggler, I'd go with Bolton.

Golden boot

Cristiano Ronaldo's goal haul last season was astonishing but can he reproduce last year's sort of form? Of course he'll be out after his operation but I still suspect he'll be the man to beat. This season will be difficult for him though - with regards to the Real Madrid saga, I just don't understand the boy. Ok, he was exceptional last time but I think he has a lot to thank Manchester United and the fans for, especially after the Rooney incident at the World Cup. I think the fans feel let down that he strung out making an announcement about his future all summer. There has been a lot of lost loyalty and Sir Alex and the players have to use their charm to say, 'We're welcoming him back', and hope his form makes the fans love him again. If Arsenal play with confidence then Adebayor will be up there again, as will Torres.

Best buy

He's cost big money but I think Robbie Keane could be a catalyst for Liverpool. He'll be enthusiastic and committed to the team, not just when it's going well but when things are going wrong, too. I think he'll have a massive say in how Liverpool do this season and if they manage to win the title or go very close, I can't see how there could be a better signing. He's clever, he'll deliver that cute ball and he'll allow Steven Gerrard to slot back into midfield.

Barking buy

I've been at bit surprised at the lack of transfer activity at Everton. I know they keep talking about Joao Moutinho but that doesn't seem to be happening. I don't know enough to comment on their finances but I certainly think Moyes and the Everton fans deserve to be backed with money for new players.

Soccer Saturday summer slacker

I'm definitely worried about losing the contest for 'Best Tan' to Charlie Nicholas. I had a great glow but sadly I've been back for a couple of weeks. Then again, I think Charlie gets a bit of help from the sunbed!

i really think villa have a good chance of breaking into the"top four" this season, there is a real buzz at villa park at the moment.mon has a good team and has signed some good players ,its time the top four were broke up and villa just might be the team to do it.?

Richard Heywood (villa fan) says...

I dont get how maybe last season we (villa) were linked with robbie keane 4 only £6.5 million. and a season later liverpool splash £20 million on him especially when gareth barry was meant to be there number 1 target ????? and how after that can benitez moan about not being given enough money to me they didint need another striker after all they did have torres. yes he and gerrard were there only decent players last season but all they need is 2 good full backs and maybe a 1 or 2 good wingers not too splash £20 million on robbie keane they probably could have got ricardo quaresma for that much money n well i know id rather have quaresma (in liverpools team). My top 5: 1. Man U, 2. Chelsea, 3. Arsenal, 4. Liverpool, 5. Villa Bottom 3: Bolton, Fulham, Stoke Best signing so far for how much they cost: Geovanni to hull on a free. Worst signing for the money they cost: Andy johnson £10.5 million or robbie keane £20 million

Shaun Kirk says...

Man u will win title, chelsea 2nd, arsenal 3rd, Spurs 4th, Liverpool 5th, Pompey 6th, Aston Villa 7th. Surprise package, Wigan - under-rated midfield with kapo, koumas, cattermole, valencia. Going Down - 3 promoted teams. Golden Boot - Rooney or Adebayor. Players of the season - Rooney and Modric. Worst buy - Robbie keane - worth nowhere near 20m.

Alex Jones says...

Its liverpools season, Arsanal have brought in no one and there squad isnt big enoth. Man U with no ronaldo thats more than half there goals from last season gone until christmas. And if they sign bervatov it wont make a difference til christmas because if you look at his stats he doesnt start scoreing loads til then and he's lazzy so with no robbie keane could be thought. Chealse have only got deco and boswinga and you only have to look at ballack to see it will take him at least a season to got into the game. Liverpool got the best signing in Robbie Keane because he knows the prem better than anyone, but liverpool will only win if Keane and Torres can find a partership, if they do its at least 45 goals for the 2 of them.

Not looking forward to this season.Being an Evertonian i was hoping for at least 5 new signings, and quality signings as well! But for some reason,Everton like to do things the hard way, should be use to it by now! Cant see any body but Man Utd or Chelsea to win it. Arsenal or Liverpool for 3rd+4th,and they call it the most exciting & best league in the world, Predictable and boring!! The battle for 5th,6th+7th also the battle to stay out the bottom 3 will be more interesting+even if i think Hull City+Stoke City go down, it would be great for them to survive! So sorry Hull+Stoke with Bolton,West Brom+Fulham. Spurs do their usual by buying superstars, but always fail to live up to their hype, having said that Spurs,Villa maybe Pompey could battle out for the places below the top 4,Luckily for Everton,we have Man City+Newcastle that are better at shooting themselves in the foot than ourselves. I will be happy with good cup run,and top 8 if possible, still got till the 31st August to get new players, but i wont hold my breath.

i am surprised that everyone has written off everton. They may have lost carsley, who im sure we can find a replacement for, johnson (23 goals in 77 games) and gravesen/fernandes who were pretty poor. however in cahill, pienaar and arteta we have one of the best passing midfields outside the top 4. lescott yobo and jagielka are definately the heartbeats of the best defence outside the top 4. we all know that scoring goals is pointless if you keep letting them in (spurs). in yakubu we also have a potent goalscorer. just cause we dont spend 20 mil on 30 year old strikers doesnt mean we arent still a great club. if we can sign 3 average and 1 good player before the start of the season, we WILL be 5th

Sean Casey says...

I can't understand why Everton have been written off by every Sky pundit. Ok I know they are yet to sign anyone but cast your mind back to a few seasons back when we were being tipped for relegation by the so called 'experts' and we went on to clinch 4th. I'm not saying that Everton are guaranteed 5th but most of the pundits are backing Spurs for 5th as they did last season and where did they finish? That is no dissrespect to Spurs they are a good side I'm just making the point that you don't always have to spend millions to be successful as David Moyes has already proven. It will be interesting come May how many of these predictions will be right.

Neale Bowdler says...

1.Man U (if they manage to prise Berba away from us) 2.Chelsea After that I think there is a few teams who could fight this year for 3/4 place. Obviously the Scum and L'pool will be there or there abouts. Villa and Pompey will push hard as , I hope, will Spurs. I think currently we are the strongest contenders to break top 4 but we still need 3/4 signings if Berba goes 4. An athletic CB to cover the King. A gritty DM(Veloso would be nice :-)) and then finally a STK to replace Berba and another flair AM/FWD, Id like Capel for his natural left foot but would be ecstatic with Arshavin. Good luck to all for the coming season COYS!!!

Andrew Balcom (Arsenal fan) says...

What is this nonsense about Arsenal finishing fifth! Last year before the season began everybody was writing Arsenal off, and then what happened? They had an amazing start to the season. Has anybody here actually checked Arsenal's first few games, seeing as momentum can be very important. Well, there first games are easy: W.B.A, Fulham, Newcastle, Balckburn then Bolton. Not that hard of a start. If Arsenal can get some momentum going, they could be the "Suprise Package" of the season.

Reece Evans says...

I agree with Phil in that Spurs have a great chance of finishing in the top 4, especially with the variety of midfielders available. Only thing is whether Ledley can play every week, which is doesn't seem he can so I think they'll need a top centre back to last the season. Arsenal always seem to challenge the top even when their squad seems weak and probably will come close again this season. Liverpool will be much better with the intelligence, attitude and work rate of Keane, I can't believe some people don't think he's good enough. However, they lack width which means they'll lose points needed to mount a full challenge.

Mike Smithson (Bristol Rovers fan) says...

I think Chelsea will win the league this year. They came close last year with a nobody manager and a few injuries at important times is what ruined their chances. They've made a few useful additions and managed to hang on to key players. If they can avoid injuries this year they will run away with it. Man Utd 2nd, Liverpool 3rd, Arsenal 4th, with Spurs, Man City, Everton & Villa fighting for the remaining European spots. Best buy of the season (so far) has got to be Gio dos Santos to Spurs. Very reasonable fee for a player that will be considered amongst the best in the world in a couple of seasons time. Worst buy (so far) Jo to Man City. Too much money to be spending on a relatively unproven player. Top scorer, Jermaine Defoe. One of the most natural goalscorers the premiership has seen and playing alongside Crouch will provide him with plenty of chances.

Andy Mclaren (Liverpool fan) says...

Liverpool Won't win the league this year, but we will be up there. We will make a good challenge this year. I agree Liverpool need a world class winger, but end of last season we played well with Kuyt on the right Babel on the left and Gerrard behind Torres. The Champions League qualifier was poor, but it was Liverpool's hardest game so far. Another good workout before Sunderland on Saturday. And we're missing Babel, Lucas and Mascherano still. The title is between United and Chelsea this season with us 3rd. Arsenal 4th. Arsenal fans are in a world of there own they haven't won anything in four years and keep going on about a young squad. Start winning something before you knock Liverpool. Under Rafa, two champions league finals, won one, won the FA Cup and the European Super Cup and narrowed the gap at the top. Young squad or what Rafa has achieved??? I would go with Rafa. Torres Golden Boot, Ronaldo quality again, Deco might make Chelsea more exciting. I think Rooney is due a good season too!!

David Mills (everton fan) says...

I find it funny how deluded Liverpool supporters are thinking they can win the league. Keane will do well but they have failed to strengthen their main weakness which is on the wings. They will finish fourth yet again. I'm suprised Arsenal seem to be underestimated again after last seaon. Wenger knows how to find a world class player and I'm pretty sure he's found a few more gems. Carlos Vela will be one of the stars of the season and I expect Denilson Diaby and Nasri to really show their class. Everton will struggle to repeat last seasons form unless they make some transfers soon. But watch out for Jose Baxter and Jack Rodwell who will be future England players.

Arsenal will win the premier league!! The gunners will be gunning for glory this time round. My predictions: 1) Arsenal. 2) Chelsea 3) Man united 4) Liverpool 5) Newcastle 6) Aston villa..........15) spurs

i am a liverpool fan and i dont think we will be challenging for the title this season we need more top quality signings beintez should go and raid valencia silva villa and marchena then maybe we will win the title but until then i can't see us going nowhere fast. i think united will win the league just because of the strength in depth chelsea coming a very close second deco could well be the player there have been looking for, liverpool third and spurs fourth. arsenal will come fifth with portsmouth not far behind. bargain buy luka modric looked quality in euro 2008 barking buy has got to be johan elmander overrated at 11 million cant see him getting the goals to keep bolton up. three to go down hull stoke and bolton.

Adam Gagan (manchester united fan) says...

Why on earth are all the pundits saying that Robbie Keane will have a great season? He is a good player and that's it! Is he better than Rooney, Tevez, Adebayor, Torres, Drogba etc. or near their standard? There is a reason why Arsenal, Chelsea and Utd have not signed him. He is not a top 4 team player and will not cut it week after week. As for the pundits, well there is a reason why they are pundits and not managers...

Mark Grundy says...

Why does everyone automaticaly write off the newly promoted teams? how many people could name three of hull's new signings in fact most people probably think they still play at boothery park, i think all three new teams are capable of competing with the likes of wigan,Bolton ETC and should be judged at christmas not before a ball is kicked.

Livi James says...

I'm an ardent Liverpool fan but we cannot win the PL with Benitez. Too much rotation and tinkling with the team. Tinkle with the team during pre-season but not when the real thing starts. He'll continue playing players out of position. The last thing you want to do as a coach is to make your players unhappy and that is the only success Rafa will have again this season. How can a coach only make changes after 1 hour's play no matter how poor someone is playing. Liverpool has the squad to win the PL but they need a coach who knows that team chemistry is the single-most important aspect in football. Steven Gerrard, and others as well, never know which position they will play from match to match and that also will be the status quo this season. By making 5 or 6 changes every game he is denying the players the opportunity to get used to each other and that will not change until he is given the 'boot'. He acts as if he is a football wizard when in truth and in fact he knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the game. All those people who keep on supporting rafa at the expense of LFC will just have to watch as Manchester United become the winningest club in the English league. Sad, VERY SAD!!!!!!!!!!

As a neutral and impartial observer, it appears to me that the following will happen this year:- 1. Chelsea 2. Man Utd 3. Arsenal 4. Liverpool 5. Tottenham 6. Portsmouth 7. Aston Villa 8. Everton 9. Newcastle 10. West Ham 11. Man City 12. Fulham 13. Sunderland 14. Wigan 15. Blackburn Rovers 16. Middelsborough 17. Bolton 18. West Brom 19. Hull 20. Stoke. Best Buy (so far) Bentley (Tottenham) Worst Buy (so far) Jo (Man City) Golden Boot - Robin Van Persie (Arsenal) Summer Slacker - Jeff Stelling!
