Tevez v Berba

Alex Dunn takes a light-hearted look at United's striking talent

Tevez v Berba

"Tell him to stop running boss."

How much must Dimitar Berbatov hate Carlos Tevez?

That's the question, along with 'how does Jamie Carragher manage to get a wedgie every time he makes a slide tackle?' which has most frequently interrupted my thoughts when watching football this season.

I've become obsessed. I'll spend whole Sunday afternoons watching re-runs of United games through the eyes of the Bulgarian via player-cam, desperate to catch him mouth an obscenity or sneer when his Argentine team-mate runs the length of the field with United 4-0 up at home to Bolton to tackle Danny Shittu. With his head.

There's something mesmeric about watching two players, both undeniably of world class calibre, play the game from such contrasting mindsets. Put simply, Tevez is everything Berbatov isn't and it's clear from the 'Argentina' chants that serenade the former's every touch that the Old Trafford faithful have made up their mind which they prefer. At times it seems as though there's more chance of the home crowd adopting a chant for Uncle Bulgaria than their own number nine.

It is though the man that matters who has nailed his colours to Berbatov's mast this season, with Sir Alex Ferguson unequivocal in his conviction that his £30million acquisition is the heir apparent to King Eric. To date, the crown has not quite fitted. When quizzed on the United crowd's affection for Tevez, Fergie replied 'they love a trier' which sounded not dissimilar to a teacher telling a pupil they're 'special' because they have particular needs.

Throughout his two seasons at Old Trafford Tevez has been the model professional and is popular with his team-mates, fans and manager alike but his recent behaviour smacks of a petulance that owes as much to his 'owners'' desire for a lucrative pay-day as it does his own ambition and frustration. Giving Fergie the old Hulk Hogan ears and sulking whenever he is withdrawn sits better with his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and could, in the long-run, prove to be his undoing when United's board meet to talk cold figures. They'll be loath to add diapers to next season's kit bill.

Berbatov's laissez-faire school of thought/movement can be frustrating for the partisan but the manner in he which he nonchalantly brought down Darren Fletcher's long ball and laid on the perfect pass for Tevez in the recent Manchester derby was more je ne sais quoi. Berbatov's got that certain something you just can't bottle, although there have been reports he has been in talks about fronting a new antiperspirant, it's got the tagline - BERBATOV: Guaranteed no sweat.

It would do a disservice to Tevez's talent though to label this a bout between the artisan and artist; craft and art, but there are clear parallels that can be drawn. Berbatov is Eubank to Tevez's street fighting Benn, is Peter Cook to Dudley Moore, is Baddiel to Skinner, Style Council to The Jam, Blur to Oasis. If the pair were pets, admittedly unlikely, Berbatov would be a cat that barely looks up when you get home, while Tevez would lick you and run off with a shoe. Think Garfield and Odie.

Berbatov's physique hardly does him any favours either. He's got the head of Andy Garcia and body of Jarvis Cocker and just doesn't look like a footballer. An up and coming mafioso maybe, but when he finally takes the hint and tracks back his tackling is reminiscent of a geography teacher that's had to take PE at the last minute. Somewhat perversely, he's fast becoming a poster boy for fat Sunday League strikers. His mantra is one I used to embrace; once when a centre-half lost patience with my reluctance to hare after one of his aimless punts forward and screamed 'CHASE IT!' I retorted 'You chase it, you f***** kicked it.' Berba would have been proud of that one.

Tevez, in stark contrast, is Brian Glover in Kes. He's probably only up to Berbatov's nipples but has an infectious and insatiable appetite for the fight that has United fans beating their chests and doing the unthinkable: singing about a team in blue and white.

Think with the head rather than heart though and the stats are slanted in Berbatov's favour. The big man has managed nine league goals to Tevez's five and has the most assists in the league alongside Frank Lampard, ten apiece. Tevez has assisted just three. The tackle count narrowly goes against Berbatov, with Tevez taking it 1,923 to three.

Ferguson, for his part, retains the utmost confidence in a player he has clearly always fancied managing, a la Cantona. While he persistently talks of United in terms of passion and guts and champions the spirit of risk and reward, he also appreciates the finer things in life. His love of fine wine is well known and while he'd bristle at being labelled a champagne socialist, he has managed to weld together sides that embrace cavalier spirit with roundhead efficiency.

Berbatov, like a vintage red, is an indulgence but one that Ferguson can well afford. It remains to be seen whether he feels the same about Tevez.

Great stuff. Berb's languid style is v frustrating as a supporter but his touch is probably the best in the league. His stats speak for themselves with regards to assists, and I'm sure if he settles next season we'll see another 5-10 Prem goals out of him. Remember he's scored some useful goals in the CL as well. As for Tevez, his style of play makes him a supporters favourite everyday, but his finishing is not top notch. As has been said before he's a poor man's Rooney and hence is not worth another £20-25mil. Will sad to see him go though (would be great to see him on a Bosman!!)

Superb article, as a United fan I must admit i've not been overly impressed with Berbatov so far, however he has shown moments of utter brilliance that underline the class which has been mentioned in many comments here, will take a while to forget the moment against West Ham where he skinned James Collins alive with virtually no space to move around in, that was superb! Both Berbatov and Tevez are totally different players, it is however a contrast that is required in modern games, the calm tactical approach and vision of Berbatov, and the all guns blazing, do or die attitude of Tevez, admittedly Tevez will not have helped himself with all the taunts and remarks he has been making, but I think thats more the influence of his owners than the palyer himself, the only thing clear to em is that David Gill needs to do what United pay him for, and get the contract for Tevez signed, no more talk about this "player not meeting the club's valuation" just face facts, it's money well spent, open the cheque book and job done, sell Nani to help fund it, he wont get in the team once Tosic starts playing anyway.

Great article higlighting the two contrasting styles of these players but i have to take people up on the comparison between Berba and Eric. There is no comparison between the two. Trapping the ball out of the goalkeepers kick 3 times this season and having only two stand out games (west ham at home and West Brom away) does not justify any comparison with Eric. I agree Berba has more natural ability than Tevez but until he can be bothered to get himself in the box (all his goals this year have been Ruud style poachers goals) and not collect the ball in the centre circle make a pass and give up then i would have the work rate of tevez every time. Berba is a striker who does not want to shoot and 14 goals in 42 appearences is not the return of a 30m centre forward for me, how many times has he had the opportunity to have a shot and gone for a pass instead (people criticise Ronaldo for doing the opposite but look how many goals he gets, if you dont buy i ticket you dont win the lotto). If Tevez goes as expected then we either need to sign an out an out striker in the Benzema mould who will do all he can to be in the box to finish off the numerous chances Rooney / Ronaldo et al create or as i expect Ronaldo will play up top next year and we will go for a winger. I dont think its any coincidence that now we get to the business end of the season Berba is on the bench more often than not. I lost all confidence in him when he missed from 4 yards out in the last minute at Parkhead - a huge game - the kind that Eric would have thrived in.

A very well thought and very entertaining article, i love the garfield to odie comparison because that is very true. I think Tevez is good for the business end of the season when the going gets tough but Berbatov is good for the fine form part of the season where United get a head and he can just get the ball down hold it and just pick the right pass to keep United in possession and in control. They both have great qualities and love em both, i really want Tevez to stay but he needs to take away his tantrum style moaning, look at Rooney he is not just a vital part to United and one of the best players in the world but he is also a squad player and plays when and where Fergie says, that is what Tevez needs to adopt to become a regular and not throw his toys out of the pram when hes going off and a not starting. Great Article and keep up the great work.

Great article, as everyone has stressed. Well done sir. Berba over Tevez, The reason is simple, Tevez is not the same player when he starts a match, we even saw this against Arsenal. He is a great sub, super sub, and I'd love it if he stayed, but he has to be happy in sitting out games until the 65th-75th minute, and start occasionally, this is where he is best. Berba is quality, I was really annoyed with him for most part of the season, but just watch his game, CLASS!! Keep them both, one for the class and the other when aggression is needed, but Carlitos must accept that he is not the best of the 3 strikers and comes in at number 3, therefore he will miss some games, and not start most of the time. If however I was given the choice to decide between one or the other, it'd have to be Berba without thought, which also probably means that Benzema is on his way to a place we like to call home. Nevertheless...UNITED!!

one of the best sporting articles I have read in a long time. "Think Garfield and Odie" - brilliant! I do hope Fergie decides to keep him. Undoubtebly it has been United's depth in their squad that has kept them at the top of the table and reach the Champions League final. To lose Tevez would be a massive hit to the club. You cannot put a price on the graft that Carlos puts into each game.

Fantastic article, had me in stitches. I'm glad someone else noticed the andy garcia resemblence. I feel berbatov is more of a home game player, when utd will have lots of the ball and need something special to break down the 10 men in defence. I think fergie likes to use tevez in games against quality opposition, like with park, he will always put in a shift and close down the opposition. However i feel Berbatov has also been putting more work in this season than his days at spurs. I seem to remember the game earlier in the season at the reebok where he had run more miles than any other utd player? maybe I got that wrong, but still the man has the first touch of a god...or a king by the name of eric maybe?

Superb article !! It mirrors both players perfectly..The smooth-operating and nonchalant house cat against an energetic, agressive pocket-sized pitbull. I love Berba and Carlito equally. Berba will come good though..i have no doubt about it.

Haha, that Sir is one of THE best articles I've had the pleasure to read. Berbatov has certainly frustrated me in recent weeks but I think it's easy to forget that he was in fine form when Utd went on a run of games without conceding a single goal. As a fan of football first I do get easily frustrated with players that don't seem to be putting in 100% which is more noticeable when we're at the important end of the season. We want all the players to be showing there willingness to put in effort particularly when it's needed this time of year. I think it's right to state that not keeping Tevez would be a loss to the Utd team/squad and certainly Fergie would lose another dimension which has been required for at least a good couple of very important games recently.

Great article, funny and intelligent. No question that they are both great players, and I think its great to have such diversity in your squad, Tevez, the opitomy of heart and courage, in my view, you have to have a player of his calibre, but at the same time, you always need a player who can make something out of nothing, and Berbatov has that. I say pay the money for Tevez and keep Berbatov, they are both indepensable!

This is an amazing article told all my footie friends to have a read. I feel that although it is hard to agree but teams need both kinds of players after all David Ginola and his likes on their day are priceless and Tevez is too for his hard-work and moments (rare) of brilliance. But that is why you have managers like Sir Alex to know when to use them.
