The Iranian FA claims to have held positive talks with Sven Goran Eriksson regarding their coaching post.

The Swede is currently preparing for this summer's World Cup finals, as he is to lead the Ivory Coast in South Africa.

However, that role is only a short-term post and he will be back on the open market come the end of the tournament.

Iran hope they can persuade the former England and Mexico boss to head to the Middle East, with initial contact having already been made.

"We've had a positive talk," Mehdi Taj, vice-president of the Iranian FA, is reported as saying on Persianfootball.com.

"We have negotiated with Sven Goran Eriksson about leading Iran in the Asian Championship."

Current Iran coach Afshin Ghotbi has a contract which is set to take in the Asian Championship, but there is a clause in his deal which allows the FA to release him prior to the competition getting underway.

Should Iran fail in their efforts to land Eriksson, former Turkey boss Fatih Terim is also believed to be on their shortlist.
