Sky sources understand that Mark Hughes has turned down the chance to become manager of Al Ahli.

The Dubai-based club had targeted an ambitious appointment to help them become a major force on the world stage.

Hughes emerged as a favourite for the role earlier this week when it was reported that he had flown out to hold talks with Al Ahli.

The club is owned by the Crown Prince of Dubai - Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Al Maktoum - and they have a huge amount of money behind them.

Having already signed Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro, a lucrative offer was believed to be on the table for Hughes.

But the manager, who has been out of work since leaving Manchester City midway through last season, has rejected the opportunity.

Hughes has been strongly linked with a move to Fulham should Roy Hodgson take charge of Liverpool.
