Ronaldinho was the star of the show in the Milan derby, while David Villa fired Valencia top in Spain.

Elsewhere, Lyon maintained their commanding lead at their top of Ligue 1 and Bayern Munich continue to falter in the Bundesliga.

Groningen are the surprise leaders in Holland, while Rangers and Celtic both secured maximum points this weekend.

SPL

Celtic needed a last-minute winner from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to see off a dogged Aberdeen side on Saturday.

The towering Dutchman had given the Hoops an early lead at Parkhead, only to see the Dons turn the tie on its head as Charlie Mulgrew bagged a brace.

However, Australian hit-man Scott McDonald restored parity and Vennegoor of Hesselink sealed a 3-2 win with time running out.

That win ensured Celtic remain on the heels of Rangers, who claimed a comfortable 3-0 success at Hibernian on Sunday.

Kenny Miller added another two to his tally for the season, helping to silence the Gers doubters, while Madjid Bougherra was also among the goals.

Primera Liga

Valencia remain unbeaten in Spain and moved back to the summit with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Deportivo this weekend.

The unstoppable David Villa helped Los Che on their way with a brace, while Juan Mata and Joaquin also found the target.

A last gasp penalty from Lionel Messi handed Barcelona a 2-1 victory in their city derby with Espanyol, while Real Madrid also left it late before clinching three points at Real Betis.

Atletico Madrid slipped up against Sevilla, going down 1-0, while Almeria's fine early season form continued with victory at home to Recreativo Huelva.

Serie A

A feisty Milan derby was settled by Brazilian superstar Ronaldino on Sunday as AC claimed bragging rights over Inter.

The only goal of the game arrived before the break, but Nicola Burdisso and Marco Matterazzi both saw red late on for Jose Mourinho's side.

Inter's slip means Lazio now lead the way in Italy as Mauro Zarate led them to a 3-1 win in Torino.

Napoli and Udinese are also among the pacesetters at present and both claimed maximum points this weekend in narrow wins.

Bundesliga

Bayern Munich slipped to their second defeat of the season against Hannover, keeping Jurgen Klinsmann's side well off the pace.

Mladen Petric's solitary strike for Hamburg handed them victory over Borussia Monchengladbach and keeps them top of the pile.

Energie Cottbus claimed their first win of the season away at Hertha Berlin and Werder Bremen emerged victorious in a nine-goal thriller with Hoffenheim.

Ligue 1

Lyon remain five points clear in France after Karim Benzema and Fred helped them to a 2-1 success at home to Nancy.

Toulouse remain the closet challengers to the perennial champions as they claimed a late win at Valenciennes, but Marseille dropped points on the road at Le Mans.

Paris St Germain's recent wobble continued as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Grenoble, while Sochaux remain winless at the foot of the table.

Eredivisie

Groningen secured a third victory in four outings as they proved too strong for Feyenoord on Sunday.

Reigning champions PSV Eindhoven are hot on their heels, though, and had Stijn Wuytens to thank for handing them a narrow 1-0 win over rock-bottom Volendam.

Ajax made light work of seeing off Vitesse Arnhem at the Amsterdam Arena and AZ Alkmaar put five past Willem II.

Best of the rest

Greek giants Olympiakos saw their perfect start to the season come to end this weekend as they were held by OFI Crete, allowing PAOK Salonica to draw level at the top.

In Portugal, Sporting Lisbon came out second best in their derby with Benfica, slipping to a 2-0 defeat, while Hulk was on target for Porto in their 2-0 win over Pacos Ferreira.

Trabzonspor and Galatasaray both maintained their unbeaten records in the Turkish Super Lig with victories over Antalyaspor and Konyaspor respectively.
