FC Basel have confirmed Christian Gross will be sacked after 10 trophy-laden years with the club.

The former Tottenham boss collected four league titles and four cup titles with the club, and twice qualified for the UEFA Champions League, but his record of success was not enough to save him in the wake of a 4-1 loss to Grasshoppers on Sunday that ended their title hopes this year.

In a lengthy statement on the club's official website, the board paid tribute to his achievements but expressed disappointment that the club "has failed to reach its most important goals of the season".

The board pointed to a loss of form since December, which is when Gross had been handed a new contract until 2011.

Gross, 54, will take charge of the team for the last time on Friday in the season finale against Young Boys.
