Roy Hodgson insists he did not resign as coach of Finland, but left the post because his contract had expired after the failure to reach the finals of Euro 2008.

Finland finished fourth in Group A, with Poland and Portugal securing qualification to next summer's finals.

The Finnish Football Association confirmed Hodgon's departure on Friday and Hodgson has since told Sky Sports News of his reasons for leaving the job.

"I didn't resign my contract ran out," said Hodgson. "What I did was refuse the offer of a new contract.

Decision

"It was a hard decision to make because it has been a great time, but I have other possibilities that I want to pursue.

"So, sadly I turned down the offer of a new contract and I will be doing something else in the New Year."

Hodgson also confirmed reports that he is set to re-join his old club Internazionale.

"I will take up the offer, which I've had for a while now, with Inter and work alongside the president (Massimo Moratti) in an assistant's role."
