Motherwell manager Mark McGhee had "no complaints" after hearing during a television interview that he had lost his bid to become Scotland manager to George Burley.

The Scottish Football Association have yet to announce an appointment but it is understood 51-year-old Southampton boss Burley is the man being lined up to succeed Alex McLeish.

McGhee was being interviewed ahead of his side's 1-0 Scottish Cup fourth-round replay victory over Hearts at Fir Park last night when he was told he had been overlooked by the SFA.

However, asked whether a courtesy call from the SFA would have been in order, McGhee said: "In a sense, yes. But the stuff goes out. I've got no complaints.

"I'm not really sure what the situation is, somebody has to clarify it for me.

"I was told live on Sky that George was appointed.

"If that is the case then I'm disappointed for myself but I am delighted for him and I will be right behind him."

Disappointing

Hearts stand-in manager Stephen Frail, who worked as reserve coach under Burley at Tynecastle, took time out from analysing his side's disappointing result to welcome the SFA's appointment.

He said: "I think he will do great. He was fantastic on the training ground and everyone knew their roles within the team.

"Tynecastle lifted instantly when he came, training sessions were sharp and we played them at high tempo.

"It's a positive appointment and I wish him every success."
