Georgia are keen to appoint former Chelsea manager Avram Grant as the new coach of their national team.

Grant was sacked by Chelsea at the end of last season after eight months in charge at Stamford Bridge.

He paid the price for not leading the Blues to either the Premier League title or UEFA Champions League glory, but he has now been offered a way back into the game.

Nodar Akhalkatsi, president of the Georgian FA, was impressed by Grant during his time at Chelsea and is aware that he also has experience at international level with Israel.

German Klaus Toppmoller was dismissed as Georgia coach after a disappointing Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and Akhalkatsi wants to see an improvement.

He has identified Grant as his first choice for the role, saying: "I have spoken with him and offered him the job.

"We have monitored his work with the Israel national team and Chelsea and feel he is a good coach. We will speak again soon."

Georgia have been drawn in the same group as Italy, Bulgaria, Republic of Ireland, Cyprus and Montenegro in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
