World Cup winner Ossie Ardiles has thrown his hat into the ring for the Scotland job, but Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies is keeping quiet over the vacancy.

The Scottish Football Association are searching for a new man to lead the national side after George Burley was sacked on Monday evening.

Burley's 22-month tenure came to an end in the wake of the dismal 3-0 friendly defeat by Wales which followed the failure to qualify for the World Cup.

Numerous names have already been linked with the post and former Tottenham and Newcastle boss Ardiles is keen to be considered.

The Argentina legend, who also applied for the Aberdeen job in the summer, told eveningexpress.co.uk: "I would love to manage Scotland and I could turn them around.

"Scotland's squad has lost their fight and unity. That was obvious in the 3-0 loss to Wales because they looked lost in that game.

"If I was Scotland manager I could get that back, and have them fighting for the cause again."

Endless

City Ground boss Davies was not prepared to clarify his position any further when questioned on the matter.

He told the Nottingham Evening Post: "I have had endless calls about this and I don't want to say anything."

The former Preston and Derby manager only took charge on Trentside in January of this year and helped the club climb away from the relegation zone.

Forest have made a solid start to the current season and currently sit just outside the Championship play-off zone.
