Plymouth midfielder Damien Johnson has retired from international football after winning 56 caps for Northern Ireland.

The 31-year-old made his debut in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland in May 1999 and last represented his country last October in a World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic.

The former Birmingham ace has decided to quit the international scene to focus on his club career.

"It hasn't been an easy decision for me to make but, with the help of my family, I feel it is the best decision for my career," said Johnson.

"I'd particularly like to thank (Northern Ireland manager) Nigel Worthington for his support and understanding over the last couple of weeks. I wish Nigel and the team every success in the forthcoming European Championships."
