Abidal: Hoping for France recall

I want to say above all I don't want to leave the French team. I want to make up for what happened.

France defender Eric Abidal has refused to close the door on his international career, despite Les Bleus' World Cup debacle.

The 1998 World champions endured a nightmare campaign in South Africa this summer, failing to win any of their three games and crashing out at the group stage.

The team also staged a controversial strike by walking out on training in protest to the treatment of team-mate Nicolas Anelka, who was sent home following a row with former coach Raymond Domenech.

All 23 players that featured in the squad have been suspended for their next match, a friendly against Norway, by the French Football Federation at the request of new coach Laurent Blanc.

Sanction

But 30-year-old Barcelona stopper Abidal is hoping for a chance to atone for his behaviour in South Africa by earning another France call-up in the future.

"It is logical there is a sanction. What happened during the World Cup has never been seen before in football," Abidal told radio station RMC.

"Laurent Blanc sanctioned the whole group. (But) there will be other matches, and maybe he will call me again.

"I want to say above all I don't want to leave the French team. I want to make up for what happened."
