Beckham: Set to return
David Beckham is hoping to make his comeback from an Achilles injury for Los Angeles Galaxy next weekend.
The former England captain has been sidelined since March after he tore his left Achilles tendon during his loan spell at AC Milan.
The injury wrecked the midfielder's prospects of appearing at a fourth World Cup finals, but he is now close to a return.
Beckham confirmed he is intending to play again ahead of schedule and may be involved in the Galaxy's Major League Soccer game against Columbus Crew on 11th September.
The 35-year-old told lagalaxy.com: "The doctors' original (return) date was October 1, but I always kind of said I want to be ready before then.
"I'll keep my fingers crossed and hopefully will play in part of the game here against Columbus. I'll be on the bench, and hopefully I'll get on the field for 15-20 minutes. That's what I'm looking at."
Beckham, who returned to training with his Galaxy team-mates on 11th August, insisted retirement was never on his mind at any point from the moment the injury occurred.
He said: "When you first have an injury like this and realise how serious an injury it is, you worry that you're not going to get back to playing top-flight soccer. But that probably was in my head for only about 10 seconds."
His impending return will give Beckham a few weeks to prove his fitness to Fabio Capello ahead of England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on 12th October.
Capello has stated the door remains open for Beckham to return to the England squad having previously suggested the former skipper would not feature in a competitive game for the national team again.

Paul Mutorini, You english get so sentimental!!Yes DB was very good at passing, deadballs ect however he was not great at tackling, heading, solo runs, taking on a player. He did not have a huge amount of pace. He is not wrecked with injury and it doesnt take an expert to work out that there is not the best option for England any more. As usual you look backwards in time for the solutions to your problems today.

Out with the old in with the young was the cry of most of the press after the World Cup.. the idea being we build for the future... yet some of those same press people still want Beckham in the team, although he is now 36 and will 40 at the time of the next World Cup... oh and he has not yet proved his fitness for top level football...this is hypocracy. Although I am of the belief we pick players on merit... i.e. the best in their position make the team.

beckham is inspirational in football and in life. as an england supporter i always dream of beckhams return. he always makes you believe we have a chance from any position. no he cant run at players with the ball as the young players do , but his reading of the game and delivery of the ball is of international class. that is what we lack. come on becks we need you . you are truly inspirational.

Once again David Beckham coming back from the brink, it shows the character, determination and spirit of the man, i think he has alot more to offer the england team than playing, the likes of Walcott, Cole etc have praised becks for his words of wisdom and guidance. Once of the greatest players to ever captain his country and he did so with honor and integrity.

Like many we are all pleased to hear David will be back playing in the US and long may it continue. He still has a grat deal to contribute within the US but lets get real the future of Englands International team cannot provision for any 36 year old who will be 40 at the next world cup. Lets move forward and take the opportunity to develop youth.
