Fabio Capello made it clear after the recent draw against Montenegro in Euro 2012 qualifying that he intended to use the clash with France to look at some new faces.

And although the likes of Carroll and Henderson had been tipped for call-ups, the Italian has still sprung a couple of surprises by naming Bothroyd and Smalling.

Striker Bothroyd, 28, has been rewarded for his fine performances for Cardiff this season, although it is unusual for a player plying their trade in the Championship to be given a chance by Capello.

Centre-back Smalling has struggled to break into the Manchester United starting line-up since his summer move from Fulham but has shown enough in his few appearances to convince Capello that he is worth a closer look.

Carroll has performed spectacularly during the early part of the Premier League campaign for Newcastle, while midfielder Henderson has also caught the eye with Sunderland.

Manchester City defender Micah Richards, who has never played a game for Capello, is also part of a much-changed squad.

Arsenal duo Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs have been selected along with Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor, while some big names miss out, including Joe Cole.

Kevin Davies has also been omitted, which some will view as harsh on the Bolton skipper, who made his debut against Montenegro last month and excelled in front of Capello against Tottenham last week.

Capello's attacking options have been hit by injuries to Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent, Jermain Defoe and Bobby Zamora, while Frank Lampard was also unavailable after suffering a setback in training this week.
