Sam Allardyce has supported Paul Robinson's retirement from international football, although he believes the goalkeeper could reverse the decision.

Robinson was selected in Fabio Capello's England squad for the upcoming friendly against Hungary, having been overlooked for the World Cup.

However, the 30-year-old informed the Football Association that he did not wish to be involved because he was frustrated at being regarded as third or fourth choice.

Blackburn manager Allardyce can understand why Robinson opted to quit the international scene, but hinted that his player would change his mind if he was assured of a place in the England team.

"For the time being, England will miss him. They missed him at the World Cup because he should have gone there," said Allardyce after Robinson impressed in a 2-1 friendly victory over Celtic.

"He feels that if he isn't going to be No.1, then he doesn't feel the need to be travelling with England.

"You'd have to ask him if he'd come back if guaranteed the No.1 spot, but I would presume so.

"Certainly at this moment in time, though, he doesn't feel that's the case. He feels that he should be No.1 and has always felt that way.

"As my player, I support him because I see him week in, week out and know how well he has performed.

"It's a big decision he's made, but I understand it."

Allardyce believes Robinson is a much better player now than when he joined Blackburn from Tottenham in 2008.

"He has constantly improved his game over the last 18 months and his confidence has grown," said Allardyce.

"What you saw (against Celtic) was a reflection of how he has been for me since I've been here."
