Joachim Low's side face the Azzurri in a friendly on Wednesday but they will be without Bayern Munich striker Gomez as he has suffered a knee injury.

The 25-year-old damaged ligaments during Bayern's shock 3-2 defeat to Cologne on Saturday.

Gomez has been examined by his club's doctors and has been told the injury requires plenty of rest.

That has ruled him out of midweek international action, denying him the opportunity to add to his 41 caps.

Low has revealed that he will not be calling up a replacement, meaning veteran frontman Miroslav Klose is likely to lead Germany's attack.
