Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng requires surgery on a knee injury sustained on international duty.

The Germany full-back has returned to England to undergo an operation after experiencing discomfort in the build-up to Germany's friendly with Australia.

Boateng sustained the injury during a warm-up prior to his country's 4-0 Euro 2012 qualifying win over against Kazakhstan on Saturday.

Germany assistant coach Hansi Flick revealed on Monday that the former Hamburg player had left to travel back to Manchester .

Boateng will now be in a race against time to be fit to play any part in City's remaining matches of the season.
