Alonso: Accepts investment is needed
It (the fallout) happened between the board and the owners, it will be those people that need to find the right solution. Liverpool is supported by so many fans and these people need to be respected.
Xabi Alonso
Quotes of the week
Xabi Alonso is much like his passes: neat, to the point and on occasion cutting.
The well groomed Spaniard casts an affable glow over proceedings in the bar of the Liverpool hotel where we are to convene our interview, contentedly signing national team shirts that have been hastily purchased from a local JJB store.
One looks as though it may have lay dormant in a bargain bin for the past 12 months, the striking red of Spain sun-damaged into a more lethargic maroon, but there is nothing cheap about Alonso as I spot a chunky Rolex as we shake hands.
It would be wrong though to cast Alonso's choice of wristwear as being indicative of the ostentatious pursuits of so many young Premier League footballers, armed as they are with the type of wages that mean the credit crunch doesn't bite quite so hard.
Normally in these type of situations, we're here courtesy of EA Sports' new UEFA Euro 2008 game, footballers have their mouths wired by a swarm of agents, advisors and valets, who surround the cash cow to ensure the journalist can milk only insipid sound bites. But Alonso, bright and articulate, clearly knows his own mind and ushers me to a sofa in the corner as we conduct our discourse as God intended - one-on-one.
A season that has seen Liverpool conclude the campaign in fourth place is one that will sate the appetite of few Anfield regulars and Alonso, who has tasted European but not domestic league glory since joining the club in 2004, accepts it has been another term of underachievement on Merseyside.
"Each season with Liverpool you are expected to be in the fight for the title, even if you don't win it, and in the past few years this is something we've been unable to achieve," he lamented to skysports.com.
"It has been a difficult season personally because of the foot injury I suffered. It was a major setback in the middle of the season but right now I feel I am in a good moment. Hopefully that will continue into Euro 2008."
It is expected that Rafa Benitez will invest heavily again in the summer as he attempts to reshape a squad that has only hinted at having anything like the staying power to mount a sustained title charge.
Despite having long been established as an Anfield favourite Alonso's own future has occupied the back pages back in Spain since the end of the season and when quizzed on mooted interest from Real Madrid, the 26-year-old chooses not to straight bat my enquiry but rather smash it out of the ground for six.
"There has been no movement from Real Madrid, whether official or otherwise. At the moment I am with Liverpool, I have a contract with Liverpool and I want to be at Liverpool.
"The people who write these things have clearly not done very rigorous research," he adds, with an arched eyebrow.
I stifle a desire to protest that not all journalists treat rumour as gospel, just most of us, as he's off again to suggest that contrary to being disgruntled at the potential arrival of new signings, he is an advocate of substantial squad strengthening.
Aware that Manchester United, Chelsea and to a certain extent Arsenal have pulled further clear of his side this season, Alonso accepts the gap will only widen further if Liverpool's board fail to back Benitez unequivocally in the pre-season.
"I am pretty sure we'll have to improve our squad. I am sure of that, knowing the gap that we already have. It is good news that we have found a striker like Fernando (Torres) to score so many goals.
"But he needs to be surrounded by good players also. Next season we need to be consistent, not to make mistakes and drop stupid points as we fight for the title.
"I think in Europe we know we can beat anyone. We have beaten Inter Milan, Barcelona, Chelsea, Milan - all great games. In the Premiership you have to be more focused, more consistent. And I think we lack that consistency to go for the title."
Disappointingly for Liverpool supporters perhaps the major story to come out of the club this season is the Dynasty-style battles of the boardroom, with co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks sparring like a pair of Melwood fishwives. Both have hung their dirty washing in public on too frequent occasion, with the future of Benitez a subplot not welcomed on the terraces.
Alonso rejects the idea that the boardroom wrangles unduly unsettled the dressing room but for the sake of the club's supporters, he believes an accord needs to be struck in the summer.
"I don't think it affects us too much but of course the players will be pleased when the situation is sorted out," he concludes.
"It (the fallout) happened between the board and the owners, it will be those people that need to find the right solution. Liverpool is supported by so many fans and these people need to be respected."
For a player who would not be short of a sycophantic entourage should he so desire, the black Porsche parked outside the hotel I'd imagine attracts friends, respect seems to be a key characteristic of his make-up. And having met the guy, he both radiates and receives it in ample measures.

Can't add much more to what's been said here - a great pro and great sportsman, in every sense of the word; to be appreciated especially in light of the money-chasing soundbites from the CL finalists' star players this past week. Must ask the question though: why is it that with arguably the best midfield in club football (Gerrard, Mascherano, Alonso), backed up by promising youngsters such as Lucas and Plessis, we are looking to sign Barry and Johnson? Where will they possibly fit in? To provide cover? This is especially confusing in light of our apparent lack of depth out wide (and perhaps upfront too - an injury to Torres is too ghastly to contemplate), and an inconsistency of quality throughout the squad (Benayoun, Pennant, Voronin are far from League winning materials). Surely we should first look to have a quality XI to compete with United and Chelsea before buying every quality central midfielder in England? Especially galling whern you think that the Toffs are chasing Joaquin. In Rafa we Trust, I guess!

I like the observations of this article with Aloson. What an unpretentious guy Aloson is. A smashing footballer with the right attitude.

Yeah Xabi is a great lad and he must stay. Get Barry by all means but not at the expense of a world class midfielder like Alonso. I know hes been out of sorts since the 2006 world cup by injuries have not helped and if he has a good Euro 2008 he,ll be back firing on all cylinders. Does,nt help him either when hes playing with someone different every week. The gap between us and the others is very little now. If Rafa had have made the Premiership his priority for the season and had all his big guns playing each game, we,d have won it. We dominated Utd at Anfield, they had i chance and scored. Chelsea got a draw with a crazy penalty decision, then home draws against Birmingham, Wigan and Spurs when they were in the bottom 3. I know we did,nt win anything this season and I,ll be out cutting the grass next wednesday (too painfull to watch either of those two lifting our trophy), but i,m encouraged that we started to play some good stuff and probably amassed more league points than either Utd or Chelsea since the barnsley match. Only for enforced substitutions in both Semis we,d be in Moscow on Wednesday. And Fernando is absolutley fantastic, reminds me so much of King Kenny, now Rafa just has to get a Rushie to play alongside him, Lets hope Spain win Euro 2008 and Pepe, Xabi and Torres come back buzzing.

I think Alonso is the most underated player at Liverpool, He and Mascherano are the future, I would sign Barry and sell gerrard for the 40 million he is supposed to be worth. I think Steve Gerrard has massively underacheieved this season. The games he played against the top 3 were poor to say the least.

Great player and fantastic personality, really hope he stay's as we need to strenghten not weaken as would be the case if he left. As far as the gap in points between us and winning the league it was 11 points which is the small difference between winning and losing the 2 games against utd, that's a 12 point turn around!! Results against our biggest rivals have cost us in recent years, reverse that and we are bang in there!

The man is a deep talent and a true gent, but he form has dipped a little compared to other seasons, hope he picks up form, but Mascherano and gerrard is prob a better option for big games based on current form.

There is a very obvious connection to Alonso's injury in mid-season and our dip in form mid-season, as well as the connection between our rise in form at the end of the season with Alonso being back to fitness at the end of the season. The boy simply makes us a stronger, more cohesive unit. I'd like to see him play more aggressively, particularly with his passing (like he was in 05-06), but the guy is a beast in the middle with Masch. He NEEDS to stay, and I honestly believe he will. What a class act. Plus... I feel like Barry will probably be off on the left, as it is a major problem area for us. So Alonso's position probably isn't too under threat.

It's time for Rafa Benetez to flip the script get rid of the junk and bring on the new players! Bring: Malouda, Gareth Barry and get Camronesi The states will reach the roof tops without a doubt we need professionals to play a mans game. Get Rid Of: Riise, Kewell, and Crouch They have become Liverpools weakness! Im sure other teams would like to sign contracts with any of these 3 individuals they played their best but it's not a personal issue, mainly business so we really need to make some changes rapidly to reach that number spot.

Class act both on and off the pitch, he is one of my favorite players. Very enjoyable to watch. I would hate to see him leave the EPL. If I were Liverpool I'd be doing my best to keep a hold of a player like this.

Xabi Alonso is a great guy, keeping him is important as we would need him and Mascherano complient each other perfectly in new tactics that seen Torres and Gerrard bonded so well. Xabi is a respected but straightforward guy which is perfect because he's my favourite player at Liverpool and one of idol that i follow. YNWA

I`m a liverpool supporter since many years ago, and since Xabi signs for the Reds from my local team Real Sociedad, everybody like Liverpool in Basque Country. Since he is at Anfield he`s getting better and better. To sign Barry would be great for us because we need a strong team if we want to win the league, so we need players like Barry, Mascherano and Alonso all together. Xabi, you`ll never walk alone.

True gentleman on and off the pitch. He had a small blip on his form this year but I do hope he stays . Amazing passer and now that Masc is playing he can concentrate on play making and less defence.

Still my favourite player at liverpool, what an amazing guy. i hope we keep him because i feel he and mascherano complement each other so well; masch wins it, alonso spreads it to either gerrard or torres, and the two big guys do the business up front. such a down to earth professional and role model aswell, and still i believe one of rafas golden boys.

Alonso is by far the best passer of the ball in the premier league he is the kind of player i love watching who doesnt mess about by trying to run past a whole team or try something stupid i.e Ronaldo he keeps it simple and neat, And his a great role model for children with the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch the world needs more players/people like him instead of the greed so many young players are showing in the beautiful game today.

Xabi is a great player and has been a huge success for us since we signed him in 2004. We should to try and keep hold of him even if we do sign Barry because we will need a big squad if we want to challenge for the title next season, and also Barry can play in more than one possition. I don't agree with the interviewer though when he suggests Man U, Chlesea and Arsenal have pulled clear of us this season because if anything we have closed the gap between ourselves and them in the league!!!

Great to hear that Xabi Alonso will stay at Liverpool...I think Xabi has been a key midfielder for Liverpool since he joined the club...Actually his performance is not bad in this season...although he missed quite a number of games this season due to injury...But he is still a world class player for Liverpool in the future...for sure...

This guy is a true gentleman and he is the most down to earth footballer. I have met hiim once and he gave me his football boots as i was waering a shirt with his name on the back. I love the wqay he speaks the truth about the current situation at the club an how he emphasises huis desire to be succesful at or glorious club

it is obvious to me that alonso is not just a player of true class but also a real gentleman. every effort must be made to keep him at the club. he has made some very good and intelligent points without being sensationalist. there are not many people in the game that i would wish to shake hands with , but he is one of the few. good luck to him and the rest of the lads for next season.

im glad to hear what Xabi has said, however i think the problem of consistency could also lie in benitez's reluctancy to let some players go and keep playing whose that are class. We have players in the squad currently that are not good enough for liverpool, beniyoun, voronin and kuyt as a striker are all prime examples. get in some good players not squad players and cut the slack. keeping xabi however is a must for me as i beleieve that he is a player that has a lot of class and can help us win the title.

Before Liverpool acquired his services, Alonso was wanted by the likes of Real Madrid. He must be kept! Granted, Barry is a quality player but we have so many quality, established and young, talented defensive midfielders in the squad. Mascherano, Alonso, Lucas, Plessis...we don't another one. We need world-class full backs i.e. Daniel Alves and Bale/Emanuelson. Then a world -class right winger and not Pennant or Kuyt. I wouldn't mind Benitez blooding the likes of Nemeth and Darby as they have fantastic for the reserves. In Rafa we trust - YNWA
