Elano: Player of the weekend

Player of the weekend

Elano

The Brazilian playmaker started off last season like a man possessed and he has repeated the feat this time around following his brace in Manchester City's 3-0 success over West Ham. Okay, The Hammers were down to ten men when Elano struck his brace on Sunday, but the goals were both out of the top drawer. Firstly, he calmly slotted home Stephen Ireland's cross to double City's lead before capping a fine individual display when he volleyed home City's third, again from another Ireland pass.

Goal of the weekend

Steven Gerrard

I've gone with this goal for its significance as much as its brilliance. The Reds often rely on their talismanic midfielder for a piece of inspiration and it was no different at the weekend as he popped up in injury time to slam home a well-timed strike past Ross Turnbull in Middlesbrough's goal. With two wins out of two Liverpool are so far keeping my bold prediction that they could finish Premier League champions alive and well, but will they be topping the charts come May? Who knows.

Game of the weekend

Stoke 3 Aston Villa 2

This one nearly writes itself! Well almost. Not many would have fancied Stoke upsetting Villa in their home opener, but no only did they avoid defeat, but they claimed a famous last-gasp win! The same number of league wins Derby managed in the whole of last season. It looked like Villa had claimed a late draw when Martin Laursen cancelled out Ricardo Fuller's fine second for Stoke, but there was still time for Mamady Sidibe to send the majority of the Britannia Stadium home happy when he headed home Rory Delap's long throw. Exciting stuff!

Pass of the weekend

Vedran Corluka

West Ham were already firmly up against it against Manchester City thanks to Daniel Sturridge's opening goal and Mark Noble's sending off, but Corluka's pass to Stephen Ireland gave them something else to worry about. Much of City's play had been comfortable to defend before Corluka spotted Ireland's run into the box and fed him a delicate chip which he in turn guided to Elano to wrap up the victory.

Save of the weekend

Shay Given

The Newcastle shot-stopper pulled off the save of the weekend against Manchester United last Sunday and he has done it again after denying Bolton's Kevin Nolan from the penalty spot on Saturday. Given had little to do in the way of shot-stopping against The Trotters, but had he not pulled off a fine save away to his left to deny Nolan then it's doubtful Newcastle would have gone on to win thanks to Michael Owen's header.

Upset of the weekend

Fulham

Arsenal have been predicted by many to reclaim the Premier League title and following Fulham's 2-1 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City on the opening day of the season surely The Gunners would romp home at Craven Cottage? Wrong. While they looked fairly tight at the back, in Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor up front Arsene Wenger's strike force looked distinctly out of sorts. Brede Hangeland made Arsenal pay when he slide home the ball after 21 minutes, a goal the visitors never seriously looked like equalising.

Under pressure manager of the weekend

Juande Ramos

The new season might only be two Premier League games old, but who would have predicted Spurs would be pointless after games against Middlesbrough and Sunderland? Big things are expected of the White Hart Lane outfit following the summer arrivals of the likes of Heurelho Gomes, Giovanni Dos Santos and David Bentley. However, no one told Roy Keane and co the script on Saturday as they claimed a remarkable 2-1 success thanks to new-boy Djibril Cisse's late header. Spurs need to get in the winning habit and fast, but it is Luiz Felipe Scolari's high-flying Chelsea up next.

Skill of the weekend

Tuncay

Although Fuller's flick on his way to scoring Stoke's second goal was a fine piece of individual brilliance, this week's honour goes to Turkish forward Tuncay in Middlesbrough's 2-1 defeat to Liverpool. The striker flicked the ball past Jamie Carragher with nonchalant ease before forcing a fine save out of Reds keeper Pepe Reina. Wonderful piece of skill that Dennis Bergkamp would have been proud of.

Comments

Jay Smith (Middlesbrough fan) says...

Agree with a lot of the comments so far. Deco should be in there for me, he has done well in both games. My team Boro have been looking good and I am hopeful of a good season. My main fear is that I can see us conceding late goals as we saw against Liverpool.

Totally agree with Adam Garthith. I was at the game and Gerrard was quiet throughout and average at best. Carragher was a good shout as he was our MOTM against Boro surely. Gerrard pops up with one goal and it makes him a Player of the weekend? I think not. Also I agree that Boro are looking good and could suprise a few.

Simon Wainwright (Newcastle United fan) says...

Pleased to see Coloccini in there as a decent Newcastle defender is rarer than unicorn hair, but it is still early days. Very shocked not to see Deco feature again though. He is proving to be the bargain of the summer at ¿8m, making the money for Barry and Keane seem even more ludicrous.

Curtis Brand (Chelsea fan) says...

You guys seriously have something against Deco. He was brilliant this week and last week, and didn't make it into your best either time! Someone's in love with Gerrard, me thinks.

Adam Garthith (Liverpool fan) says...

I'm a Liverpool fan and what a joke to see Gerrard added to team of the week...He was poor and was shutdown for a full 93 minutes until he had a long range shot that could have gone anywhere. To anyone who didn't watch the game, watch out for the Boro this season.

Russell Little (Middlesbrough fan) says...

I totally agree with all of your choices, especially Tuncay earning skill of the weekend, although I am biased being a Boro fan but I'm very excited as to what else we are going to see from him throughout the season, and best of all we got him on a free.
