Ashley: Who next?

On Thursday evening, Kevin Keegan sensationally resigned as manager of Newcastle United and the hunt is now on to find his successor; here skysports.com takes a look at the possible candidates.

The Premier League feels as though it has been on the receiving end of a Kevin Pietersen dance down the wicket over the past seven days following one of the most turbulent weeks in the history of English football's top tier.

With that in mind, I strolled into the skysports.com office on Friday morning hoping for a slightly more relaxed day at the coalface with transfer windows done and dusted and surely no more managerial departures. However, my football editor had other ideas.

Upon my arrival, said superior requested I construct an overview of the possible men to fill the boots of Keegan at St James' Park, and to suggest who is likely get the job. Thanks boss. Predicting the activities of Newcastle is about as easy as explaining the modern offside rule to your Grandma, but here we go.

Newcastle reinforced their reputation as the cream of the crop when it comes to creating stunning headlines as Keegan resigned after only eight months of his second managerial stint with the Magpies.

Keegan - who made 78 appearances for the club as a player - was, and is, a legend and was often labelled as the man most in touch with the Newcastle public, the Geordie Messiah, and the manager capable of supplying the eye-catching football craved in the North East.

The former England boss' January return following a successful five-year spell in the mid-nineties was one of the greatest football stories of recent years, but his decision to walk away after less than one season eclipses any Second Coming and has left fans outraged, distraught and heartbroken.

Keegan was hailed as the man to put Newcastle back on the straight and narrow when he replaced Sam Allardyce at the turn of the year, but a disagreement over transfer policy with the club's technical director Dennis Wise, vice president Tony Jimenez and owner Mike Ashley saw him head for the exit.

Ashley has been cast as the villain of the piece, with Wise as his henchman, and now the man who bought Newcastle in May 2007 is charged with the task of finding a successor to King Kev to appease the restless natives of the Gallowgate End.

And who are the candidates to fill the boots of Keegan? Who possesses the necessary characteristics to fill the void? The mission to find the ideal replacement appears daunting and Ashley is likely to be knocking back something a little stronger than the pint of (non-alcoholic) lager he was spotted demolishing last weekend as he considers the options.

The model successor would appear to possess a mixture of Keegan's attacking flair, Alan Shearer's hero status, the charm of Bobby Robson and the no-nonsense approach of an Allardyce or Graeme Souness. Answers on a postcard.

Gustavo Poyet

A surprise name is the current leading light. Poyet's connections to Wise make him favourite to be the next on the Newcastle merry-go-round.

Poyet is currently assistant manager to Juande Ramos at Tottenham, but the Uruguayan's connections to Wise - who he played with at Chelsea and then served as a coaching No.2 at Swindon and Leeds United - make him a likely choice.

How this would sit with the Newcastle public is, to put it mildly, unclear.

Despite a lack of managerial experience, Poyet is believed to be viewed as the perfect man. However, there could be further backlash if Wise secures his old friend.

Skybet odds: 5/2

Dennis Wise

As technical director at Newcastle, Wise is already well aware of the way the club works and appears to enjoy a good relationship with Mike Ashley.

Unfortunately for Wise, he is not exactly top of the pops in the popularity stakes with Magpies supporters.

As with Poyet, it could be said that it is a little murky as to how London-based Wise's appointment would go down in Newcastle.

However, previous managerial experience at Millwall, Southampton, Swindon Town and Leeds makes Wise a possible candidate and second favourite with the bookmakers.

Skybet odds: 9/2

Alan Shearer

Perhaps the only man who can rival Keegan's popularity and the red-hot first choice of the Newcastle faithful.

Former captain Shearer is a Geordie and as the club's all-time leading goalscorer secured idol status.

Shearer's name is never far away from Newcastle and it appears inevitable he will fill the club's hot-seat at some point in his life.

Whether that will be as successor to Keegan remains uncertain as Shearer is rumoured to be unwilling to take the job at this moment in time.

If Ashley is keen to heal wounds, Shearer is his man. But a lack of managerial experience and other commitments may work against the 38-year-old.

Skybet odds: 11/2

Didier Deschamps

Deschamps could be seen as the thinking man's choice as he would arrive with managerial experience and, perhaps more importantly, no previous connection to Newcastle.

The 39-year-old earned admiring glances as he guided Monaco to the UEFA Champions League final in 2004 and he has also spent time in charge of Juventus.

Over 100 international caps for France have provided a reservoir of creative football knowledge and Deschamps captained his country to glory at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

Add to the mix previous Premier League experience during his playing days with Chelsea and Deschamps' stock continues to rise.

Skybet odds: 8/1

David Moyes

An abundance of Premier League experience with Everton makes Moyes another popular selection.

The Scot has been linked with Newcastle in the past and Ashley and company may attempt to lure him away from Goodison Park.

It has been rumoured that Moyes has become disheartened on Merseyside following a frustrating summer in the transfer market and an uninspiring start to the season.

After six-years at Everton, Moyes may be looking for a fresh challenge and could be tempted by a change of scenery.

Whether Everton would be willing to allow their boss to leave would be another matter and it is debatable whether Moyes would want to involve himself with another club which has endured problems in the transfer market.

Skybet odds: 8/1

The Best of the Rest

Motherwell boss Mark McGhee is a surprise contender at 10/1 and could offer the blank canvas qualities of Deschamps.

Marcelino Garcia Toral (10/1) possesses the unknown quality and it would be difficult to criticise the Real Zaragoza manager as his reputation continues to climb in Spain.

Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier could prove a shrewd choice at 12/1 after improving fortunes at Anfield at the turn of the Millennium, while ex-Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard, also at twelves, would bring European pedigree.

The Outsiders

If you fancy an adventurous flutter then look no further than Keegan's predecessor Allardyce at 100/1, while Mr Popular at St James' Park, Ruud Gullit, is out of a job after leaving LA Galaxy and available at 50/1.

Other managers who have Newcastle on their Curriculum Vitae, Kenny Dalglish and Souness, are valued at 66/1 and 33/1 respectively.

Peter Shaw (Newcastle United fan) says...

The ideal choice would be Kevin Keegan. This would mean getting rid of Ashley and Wise, and reinstating the messiah himself. I see no one else fit enough to take such a strenuous job, only King Kev has the capacity to be deal with such a challenge and as he is adored by the Geordie public is everyones first choice. Keegan can make Newcastle everyones second team again!

Why do you all hate Dennis Wise? Look at what he done at Leeds he turned them in to a decent team if he stayed they would have gone up ask any Leeds fan, they hated him cause of the Chelsea connection now they are gutted they lost him. So toon fans just wait and see what your new signings do for you (all choosen by Wise)before you turn on him. So when you start winning start cheering for super Den.

Under the current set up I think whoever comes in as manager really needs to know the score with regard to working under a director of football. Avram Grant maybe wouldn't be a bad shout.

Brandon Hood (Newcastle United fan) says...

Ashley must go, we need someone who wants to improve the club. King Kevin needs to come back at all costs with Shearer backstage. Dont tell me wise can be respected by future signings more than King Al. This is what we need and nothing else will do. Mike, do one!

Newcastle need to get Shearer in to end all doubts about his managerial credibility. He is the only choice for Newcaslte and the fans and board will back him 100%. The legend will prevail.

Even as a Boro fan I genuinely feel sorry for the fans at Newcastle. This board and the previous board have made them the laughing stock of english football. When will it end? Who is mad enough to take the job?

Nick Pownall (Leeds United fan) says...

Geordies don't despair...., Den has just about everything required to deliver what you loyal supporters want. If he gets the nod then back him, you might just be surprised. He did a quite remarkable job at Leeds in near impossible circumstances, not disimilar in some respects to what currently exists at your place and he never got the credit he deserved coz you guys somehow put a package on the table to lure him away before he managed to create real history. Denis Wise is much more than you may think.

Nick Graham (Middlesbrough fan) says...

Newcastle deserve everything they get. Every other fan in the land could see what Ashley was all about as soon as he arrived. For God's sake, the guy bid for Tottenham, a team he hs supported all his life, prior to taking over the Geordies. Do you honestly believe he was going to do the right thing by Newcastle? I don't think so. He's fattening them up to sell them before moving on to Tottenham. As a Boro fan I can simply say, 'Thank God for Steve Gibson'

Ashley has to go - and quick as possible. The treatment of KK was a lot worse than that of Avram Grant who was in the same boat. I am a Newcastle fan, and my young nephew a Sunderland fan - hence on the occassions when I take him to the S of Light the running of the club is in a different world. Quinny heads a great management and Keano is his own man - yes the Makems maybe be in the premiership like us but in reality they are in a different league. As for Wise - his management record - give us laugh. Go now the lot of you.

Nigel Hammill says...

As an exiled Keegan/newcastle fan, I`m sure we`ll see a lot of extra sales at Stadium of light. Sunderland are well run by a lovely bunch of friendly Irishmen, so howay lads, lets really hurt Ashley`s pride by jumping ship to Sunderland!

Andrew Southam says...

You dont have a dog and bark yourself, what does wise know about the quality of players that keegan has managed for many years i'm not a newcastle fan but feel for the loyal fans who turn up week after week to watch the same pantomime unfold in front of them, if a manager can't manage and has to check teams and get permission from the directors to do his job then he is not worth employing, Dennis and co have really got it wrong big time and should stay in London, what a shame that the premier league can't impose some sort of penalty on a club for every time they lose a manger in circumstances like this, deduct points or better still kick them out of the league and that should hurt Ashley's pocket, oh by the way I have no football mangerial experience but i could be the pupet in the dug out if thats what Newcastle want as long as the money is ok.

Who on earth would be stupid enough to take on the job at Newcastle under the conditions that presently exist. You hear talk of the poison chalice of English football ...well here it is NEWCASTLE UNITED.

Robert Ferguson (Newcastle United fan) says...

Ashley out. A man full of broken promises who wears a toon shirt with king kev on the back, that was probably a prediction that one day he was going to stab kk in the back. I have been a lifelong newcastle fan who thought he had seen it all when shepard was chairman but under ashley we are becoming a laughing stock, he promised so much but deliverd nothing to us fans who would bleed black and white if you cut us, he does not deserve to wear the the same toon shirt that we all wear with pride. gy mag

Ralph Gotts (Newcastle United fan) says...

An Interesting set of names to be linked with the job. If the board has any sense it wont appoint Wise. He has become a hate figure amongst the fans, not just because of this saga. As for Deschamps and Poyet, they would not go down well, firstly because of the links with Wise, and secondly because they have links to Chelsea, much hated on Tyneside, so the claim of being with a blank canvass would be untrue. Club legend Shearer is not beleived to be a realistic candidate amongst the fans, although he would be the popular choice. The only name mentioned that would have a calming effect would probably be Frank Rijkaard. However, with the current structure of non footballing men, Wise has no acheivments under his belt, unless you count ruining Leeds Utd, in another city controlling transfers, it would be difficult to attract any respectable managerial candidates, With the overwhelming majority of fans baying for Ashley's and Wise's heads to roll, fans on Tyneside look to be in for yet another dark season, after parting with hard earned cash for their season tickets and are right to feel aggreived. Ashley cant imagine the can of worms he has now opened up and the only way out for him could be through the Gallowgate, and away from the Toon to hang his head in shame. No Toon fan would shed a tear if this happened.

Chris Snaith (Newcastle United fan) says...

Kevin Keegan to be next manager (what price for that ) Ashley knows hes finishd and will sell up in the next 2 weeks to an Asian consortium that already have a bid on the table ! Keegan will be reinstated as boss Dennis Wise will be publically flogged and Ashley with his pay off will invest in a non alcoholic brewery !

what about Roberto Manchini

Which decent manager would allow Wise to pick and choose the players he can have available for his squad?
