Player of the weekend

Wayne Rooney

A number of top-draw performances once again this weekend.

But we are delighted to see Wayne Rooney back on his game and it was his display against Blackburn that saw him earn our Player of the weekend.

Rooney was not even expected to make the game after limping out of the UEFA Champions League win over Aalborg.

But he started and produced a sublime display capped off with the winning goal as he swept the ball high past Jason Brown after great work from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Goal of the weekend

Geovanni

This was a genuinely hard choice this weekend.

Matt Taylor's strike for Bolton at West Ham, Peter Crouch's brilliant bicycle kick against Stoke - but it was once again Hull's Geovanni.

After last week's sublime effort at Arsenal which helped Hull to an unlikely win - the Brazilian was at it again for Phil Brown's men.

Geovanni's goal came nine minutes in and it was a sensational strike.

It was a free-kick almost 30-yards out but he curled the ball into the top-corner wonderfully leaving Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes helpless.

Performance of the weekend

Liverpool

Hull were again knocking on the door after their second triumph in North London of the season against Spurs.

Whilst Newcastle can be more than proud of their comeback at Everton.

But it was another comeback that was our highlight as Liverpool showed they may indeed by true title contenders with their 3-2 win at Eastlands.

Manchester City were 2-0 ahead and looking relatively comfortable - but then talismanic striker Fernando Torres grabbed a brace before an injury time strike from Dirk Kuyt broke City hearts.

Sensational stuff from The Reds who are more than keeping pace at the top-of-the-table.

Pass of the weekend

Stewart Downing

Wonderful vision from the England winger as he set-up Boro's winning goal in the final minute at Wigan.

French midfielder Didier Digard looked out for the advancing Downing, but unselfishly he showed great composure to cushion the header down.

Jeremie Aliadiere took the ball down, and hammered Boro to victory.

Gaffe of the weekend

Robert Green

A real horror show from The Hammers goalkeeper as his mistake cost West Ham against Bolton.

His error handed Bolton the lead on the half-hour.

The keeper came to the edge of the box to make what should have been a routine collection for a high ball.

But Green fumbled the ball and dropped it into the path of Kavin Davies - who was left with the simple task of poking the ball into the empty unguarded net.

Miss of the weekend

Fernando Torres

A bit harsh but on the Liverpool striker after his sublime display - but he really did miss a gilt-edged chance to put his side ahead at Eastlands.

After scoring two to bring his side level, Torres was handed the chance to make it a brilliant hat-trick but it was not to be.

Brilliant play by Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane saw Torres played in at the back post - but he fired high and wide from inside the six-yard box.

Save of the weekend

Shay Given

Boro's Ross Turnbull produced a number of good saves at Wigan, but the best save must go to the ever-excellent Given.

With Newcastle's game at Everton poised at 2-2, the Irish star showed he is still capable of producing world-class stops.

Leon Osman's snap-shot from the edge of the box was heading for the top corner but Given was there to tip the ball over the bar at full stretch.

Controversy of the weekend

Brown goal

Blackburn manager Paul Ince was left furious after Manchester United's opener.

Nemanja Vidic looked to collide with Blackburn goalkeeper Jason Brown - but no free-kick was given.

With Brown on the floor, this allowed Brown to steer the ball home at the back post.

The goal stood and United went on to win 2-0, but Ince and Brown were left convinced the goal should not have stood.

Arsenal's disallowed goal at Sunderland was also a highly contentious one - although replays still could not show whether the ball was out or not, so we played safe and stuck with Brown's goal.

Moment of the weekend

Boro finally win

The moment goes to Middlesbrough, ten long months since this last managed a win away from The Riverside and they finally did it with victory at Wigan.

Aaron O Keefe says that Liverpool have a really good chance this year in the league. Thats true but I wish people would stop talking about it.

Glad to see two Boro players in the team of the weekend, after Mark Schwarzer leaving there was a lot of pressure on Gareth Southgate from the media and the blogs to buy a new keeper such as Robinson, Sorensen or Friedel. He consistently said that the young lads we have here are as good as anything in the premiership and he stuck to his words. Well done Roscoe and well done Gareth, oh and well done Chris Riggott too.

I thouroughly enjoyed this weekends display of football, Liverpool definately stepped it up a gear in the second half and showed potential to be title winners when slugging back to beat Man City, More of that level of football and the premiership title is a given. I also enjoyed seeing the new premiership team hull city playing well again!

Rooney is on fire at the moment. Perfect timing for Fabio. No classy striker to support him upfront though. But if Wayne gets the right balls, he will put it in the back of the net.. No doubt.

Liverpool are showing some serious grit and to be fair they have always been a hard to team to write off coming from behind in a game. With the current squad they have impact subs that have been sorely missing.

Sensational football this weekend ! I fear that Owen will not truely shine and show what he has still to offer playing for Newcastle. Peter Crouch is shining for Portsmouth, while Shaun W Phillips is showing what he's got to offer after leaving Chelsea and Liverpool's performance was BRILLIANT!

Liverpool definitely have title ambitions this season, and with the likes of Torres and Gerrard playing as well as they are, I think they have a really good chance of being title winners.
