Dale Steyn bowled South Africa to a 160-run victory in the opening Test against Pakistan in Karachi.

Younus Khan made a defiant 126 but Pakistan were bowled out for 263 prior to tea on the final day, Steyn finishing with figures of 5-56.

The hosts resumed on the fifth morning at 146-3 in pursuit of a distant victory target of 424.

Batting throughout the day for a draw was a more realistic prospect, and while Younus remained at the crease it remained a possibility.

Younus wasted little time adding the nine runs required to complete his 13th Test century, bringing up the landmark from 108 balls with 15 fours and a six.

Nightwatchman Mohammad Asif lasted until the sixth over of the morning before being caught off Andre Nel's bowling.

But it was the dismissal of Younus - bowled by Steyn - for 126 that opened the door for South Africa to complete victory in a Test they had dominated from day one.

Misbah-ul-Haq (23) and captain Shoaib Mailk (30) shared a sixth-wicket stand of 37 either side of lunch.

That brief rearguard was ended when Misbah was trapped lbw by Nel, triggering a lower order collapse that saw the final five wickets go down for just 33 runs.

Steyn claimed two of those scalps to complete his five-wicket haul as the tourists sealed a 160-run success, just the second time in their Test history they have won in Pakistan.

Jacques Kallis took the man-of-the-match award for scoring a century in each innings, while spinner Paul Harris also impressed with seven wickets in the match.

The series decider takes place in Lahore, starting on Monday, an occasion that will also serve as Inzamam-ul-Haq's farewell Test appearance.

Pakistan will be bolstered by both Inzamam and Mohammad Yousuf, who both missed the Karachi defeat.
