Smith: Superb season

Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith has pipped Jamie Peacock to Rugby League World Golden Boot.

The 24-year-old goalkicking hooker, who led Melbourne to Grand Final glory this season, topped the poll with Great Britain captain Peacock in second and North Queensland scrum-half Jonathan Thurston finishing third.

Peacock and his Leeds Rhino team-mate Gareth Ellis both made the annual World XIII, though, along with Wigan Warriors stand-off Trent Barrett.

New Great Britain coach Tony Smith has been named international coach of the year and Peacock has retained his international forward of the year award.

The news is sure to add extra spice to Leeds' World Club Challenge match against Melbourne on February 29.

Smith is set to skipper the Australians against Peacock's Rhinos at Elland Road, and both sides have points to prove in what will be a World Cup year.
