Roy Hodgson has revealed that he has been consulted by the Football Association regarding the search for England's next manager.

Hodgson, who left his role as Finland coach on Friday, says FA chief executive Brain Barwick contacted him regarding how to approach the hunt for former boss Steve McClaren's successor.

Barwick has come under increasing pressure to widen his search, with many suggesting he consults established football figures for their opinions.

And Hodgson confirmed that he held a brief discussion with Barwick at the recent 2010 World Cup qualifying draw in South Africa.

Advice

"I met Brian in Durban and we had a quick word," he told Sky Sports News.

"As a 'foreign' coach he wanted to know how I saw the situation and if I had anything to add.

"I was very keen to speak out of term in the conversation, they know as well as I do what to look for.

"I did not have specific advice on the England situation, they don't need it.

"I was flattered to be asked for my opinion. It was a chance to converse but I was keen not to make any bold statements."
