Rio - Jose a good choice

Defender backs former Chelsea boss for England

Rio Ferdinand believes Jose Mourinho would be a 'good' choice to succeed Steve McClaren as England coach.

Mourinho has emerged as a leading candidate to take on the role following England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

The former Chelsea boss has been backed for the post by several Premier League bosses and Ferdinand feels the Portuguese has the qualities for the job.

"I think it would be good," Ferdinand told the Daily Star Sunday about the prospect of Mourinho being appointed.

"We need someone who can organise the team into being a success.

Golden Era

"We did not mark ourselves as the Golden Era yet look at the players who all perform in the top echelon of players around Europe.

"But we can't seem to do that in an England shirt. The players always play well for their clubs, but not on a consistent basis for England.

"The next manager needs to change that - it's as simple as that.

"I can't put my finger on what needs doing because if I did I would be the next manager.

"I just think we need a manager to come in and state his views and set the team out in a clear way. That's not to say it's not been happening, but we did not qualify, so it's not been going right. We need the next manager to get that blend."

But reports in the Sunday newspapers have claimed that Mourinho would prefer a coaching position in Spain or Italy, ahead of the England vacancy.
