Captain backs Mourinho to lead England

John Terry believes Jose Mourinho 'stands out' as the leading candidate to take over as England manager.

Terry, captain of the international side, enjoyed great success under Mourinho at Chelsea as he skippered the Blues to back-to-back Premier League titles.

England are in the hunt for a new manager following Steve McClaren's axe in the wake of the dismal failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

Mourinho's media adviser has already admitted the Portuguese coach would consider the post if the Football Association came calling.

And Terry would relish the opportunity to work under his former mentor once again and has urged the FA to make the first move

New level

He told Sky Sports News: "He's one that really stands out for me and could make a big difference.

"He's a great guy tactically, he's very aware and he understands the game very well.

"He came in and took us (Chelsea) to a new level. I'm very lucky to have been able to work with Jose, he's a fantastic manager and a fantastic guy.

"It's down to the FA to contact him if they want to speak to him."

Terry also confirmed that he had already held talks with FA chief executive Brian Barwick over the search for a new manager, and a number of other issues.

Consulted

Barwick is leading the hunt for McClaren's successor and centre-back Terry expects him to speak to other senior players too.

He added: "I've had a meeting with Brian Barwick, but that will stay private between me and him. Not just about managers, it's about many things.

"I'm sure he's going to meet a few of the other guys as well and it's great to be consulted on these matters."
