Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored his 17th Test century before pacemen Daren Powell and Jerome Taylor put West Indies in control of the first Test against South Africa in Port Elizabeth.

Chanderpaul held the tourists together with a composed innings of 104 as West Innings were dismissed for 408 on day two, before driving home their supremacy by ripping out the top order as South Africa slumped to 122-5 in reply.

Resuming on 281-4, Chanderpaul soon lost Dwayne Bravo (12) and Dinesh Ramdin (1) but added vital runs with the tail in a typically obdurate knock lasting 253 deliveries.

The left-handedrfound a stubborn ally in Darren Sammy, with the pair adding 57 for the seventh wicket before Sammy was run-out by the narrowest of margins attempting a quick single.

Chanderpaul masterfully rotated the strike to add 24 with Taylor and 22 with Powell before he was bowled by Andre Nel with one that straightened from round the wicket.

The South African reply got off to a poor start when Herschelle Gibbs was caught behind off the bowling off Powell in the second over.

Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla appeared untroubled as they moved the score to 44 but Smith was trapped in front by an inswinger from Taylor and the same bowler had Jacques Kallis caught at gully for nought with the veteran all-rounder looking to leave a rising ball.

Amla (29) became Powell's second victim when he was bowled with the score on 63, and the Proteas were further undermined when Ashwell Prince edged Powell to Runako Morton having made 20.

But AB de Villiers (22) and Mark Boucher (18) did at least give the hosts some hope getting close to West Indies' total with some stern resistance as the shadows lengthened over St George's Park.
