Ana Ivanovic reached the third round of the French Open with a ruthless 6-1 6-2 demolition of Lucie Safarova.

The second seeded Serbian's game looked in fine order while dispatching the unfortunate Safarova in 55 minutes, it was as one-sided as the scoreline suggests.

Ivanovic, beaten in the final at Roland Garros by Justine Henin 12 months ago, faces 30th seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark next.

"I expected a very tough match, so to win with a score like this, it's definitely a great, great proof that I played good today," she said.

"I prepared myself that I have to work hard for every point and that's what I did out there.

"I put a lot of pressure on her but she made mistakes when I didn't expect it."

Serena progresses

Fifth seed Serena Williams, the champion at Roland Garros six years ago, joined Ivanovic in the second round with a 6-2 7-5 victory over Mathilde Johansson.

The American took the opening set in 38 minutes but did not have it all her own way, falling 5-3 behind in the second set.

However, Williams' moment of adversity was brief as she reeled off four game in a row to complete the win in a total of 93 minutes.

"I didn't want to go three sets today. I thought I could close it out in two sets and it was getting dark," said Williams, who faces either Russian Ekaterina Makarova or Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik for a place in the last 16.

"I'm tired of playing so late and in the dark and I was like, okay, I'm going to close it out before then."

It was a disappointing day for ninth seed Marion Bartoli, who said she needed a break from tennis after losing 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-2 to Casey Dellacqua in the first round.

The Frenchwoman led 6-5 overnight and managed to take the first set in a tie-break before collapsing spectacularly to lose in just over two hours.

"I'm just fed up," said Bartoli. "I'm going to turn off my mobile phone, turn off my TV set, forget about Roland Garros."

"Since the beginning of this year I've been playing and I felt tired and I thought, well, this is probably psychological, but it's five months I've been feeling this, in this state, being very tired.

"So I'll probably start practicing for the season on grass, but I first want to think about myself."

Russian duo Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Dementieva both required three sets to reach the second round.

Sixth seed Chakvetadze battled past Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives 6-3 5-7 6-1, while seventh seed Dementieva shrugged off a shaky first set to overpower compatriot Vera Dushevina 6-7 (6-8) 6-0 6-2.
