England drew with South Africa

South Africa comfortably held out for a draw on the final day of the first Test at Lord's, cruising to 393-3 at the close.

England had two days to bowl out the Proteas and win the series-opener after enforcing the follow on with a first innings lead of 346.

But South Africa's top three all made centuries and England's bowlers were able to take just three wickets in 167 overs of toil, before the sides agreed on a draw at 4.50pm.

Hashim Amla was the hero for South Africa on day five, the number three making an unbeaten 104 from 242 deliveries to see his side to safety.

Amla was the sixth batsman in the match to make a century, joining England's Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell and his own teammates Ashwell Prince, Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie on the Lord's honours boards.

Just two wickets

England claimed just two wickets in Monday's five sessions.

McKenzie, who batted after lunch with a runner because of a groin strain, had added just seven runs to his score when he mis-timed a cut at James Anderson and edged through to wicket-keeper Tim Ambrose.

The opener, who shared a double-century stand with Smith, had added 125 for the second wicket with Amla.

England's only other success also arrived in the middle session as left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom, who had been cleared to play in the morning despite a stiff back, clean bowled Jacques Kallis for 13 with an excellent yorker.

But Prince joined him and survived 54 balls for an unbeaten nine, before both captains decided to call it a day 50 minutes into the final session.

The contrast in innings for England's bowlers can be summed up by a glance at spinner Monty Panesar's figures. He claimed 4-74 in the first innings but followed that up with 60 wicketless overs.

The sides will meet again in the second Test at Headingley, starting on Friday.
