David Beckham is confident England are building up well towards their opening World Cup qualifiers.

Former skipper insists things are going well

David Beckham is confident England are building up well towards their opening World Cup qualifiers. The LA Galaxy star was speaking after starting the disappointing 2-2 friendly draw with Czech Republic. But the former captain thinks The Three Lions remain in good shape ahead of the double-header with Andorra and Croatia next month. "We are building towards the qualifiers and those games start in a couple weeks so it was important we didn't lose for the confidence," Beckham told Sky Sports News. "But we know we can play better and be more of a unit and so hopefully we can start that against Andorra." Beckham continued: "Everything is there, everything is right at the moment. We feel we have got the right players in the team. "We feel we have got the right manager, the right staff behind everyone, "It is all about getting that confidence up and taking it into these important qualifiers. "We believe we are going to qualify for the World Cup. "You've got to believe it but we know there is a lot of hard work to be done and, as long as we work hard as a team and stay together as a unit, we will have a good chance. "No-one is going to guarantee us qualification but, if we work hard, we've got the players to qualify."

No captain issue

Beckham also insists that the debate over the captaincy, as coach Fabio Capello opted for John Terry ahead of Rio Ferdinand, was not an issue. "Whoever got picked to be captain would have deserved it because Rio has had a great season and has been a great servant for Manchester United and England and John Terry has also had a great season," he said. "Any one of those two could have been captain and not forgetting Steven Gerrard. There are great leaders and captains throughout our team so we are lucky with that. "We all congratulated JT - and Rio did - so at the end of the day we all stick together and we all believe in our captain. "We are a team which helps each other out. That is what the manager wants, one thing I know he always wants from his team especially from being in Madrid with him. "He wants that togetherness in his team and he has got that. It is all about believing in each other."
