Andy Murray began his quest for US Open glory with a powerful 6-3 6-4 6-0 win over Argentina's Sergio Roitman in the first round at New York.

Murray, ranked sixth for the final grand slam of 2008, returned brilliantly throughout and had little trouble easing his way into the second round where he will play either Michael Llodra or Teimuraz Gabashvi.

The Scotsman quickly took control of the first set, opening the match at the Louis Armstrong Stadium with an ace and winning the first game with the loss of just one point.

Roitman was soon struggling on his serve as Murray unleashed a couple of impressive backhand winners to break at the first opportunity before closing out the first set 6-3 in 28 minutes.

Murray faced more resistance from Roitman in the second set but although his opponent never really threatened a break, it was the first service of the number six that was beginning to undermine his game.

Roitman held serve in the opening stages until at 2-2 Murray produced another backhand winner to break his rival.

Defiant

The Argentinian nearly forced his way back into the set in the next game as he took the Murray serve to deuce but the Scot averted the danger and went on to take the set 6-4.

The third set was a clear demonstration of the gulf of class between the two players as Murray broke in the opening game before powering through the remainder of the set.

Top seed Rafael Nadal overcame a defiant display by German qualifier Bjorn Phau to launch his bid for a first US Open crown with a 7-6 6-3 7-6 win in the first round.

Just eight days after clinching the Olympic men's singles title in Beijing, the 22-year-old Spaniard sealed a hard-fought victory after just under three hours on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

World number 136 Phau held his own in the opening set against the game's leading player before losing the tiebreak 7-4 but was swept aside in the second in 46 minutes.

Nadal, the 2008 French Open and Wimbledon champion, surprisingly double-faulted when serving for the match at 5-4 in the third before winning the tiebreak 7-4.

The newly-crowned world number one will face either Ryler de Heart or Olivier Rochus in the second round.
