Baggies dumped out of cup

Extra time win for League One Hartlepool

Last updated: 27th August 2008

League One Hartlepool United produced a tremendous display to beat Premier League West Bromwich Albion 3-1 after extra time at Victoria Park.

Hartlepool looked to be heading through in normal time after Joel Porter had struck on the hour - but with just minutes left Robert Koren levelled for Tony Mowbray's men.

But the home side were not put off their stride by Koren's goal and they grabbed two goals in the first-half of added time through substitutes David Foley and Richie Barker to seal their place in the next round.

Record signing Borja Valero, a £4.7million acquisition from Real Mallorca, was handed a debut behind strike duo Roman Bednar and Luke Moore, while there were starts too for Dean Kiely, Carl Hoefkens, Marek Cech and Luke Moore.

But it was the home side who were first to threaten when Australian striker Porter found space on the left to deliver a low cross to the near post, where Abdoulaye Meite was happy to concede an early corner.

Pools were unable to make the most of their early opportunity, but it was they who were causing the problems and Meite had to get in good blocks to deny Porter twice within seconds as first Antony Sweeney and then Andy Monkhouse picked out the front men.

The home side came within inches of taking the lead with 16 minutes gone when Porter ran on to McCunnie's long ball and lobbed the advancing Kiely, who was grateful to see his effort just clear the bar.

Bednar was quick to react at the other end seconds later after Monkhouse's header dropped nicely for him and he forced a good save from goalkeeper Arran Lee-Barrett with a rising 25-yard effort.

Sweeney had to clear off his own line after Lee-Barrett had blocked Robert Koren's shot from a 27th-minute Brunt corner.

But it was the League One outfit who thought they had taken the lead seconds

later. James Brown's left-wing cross reached the unmarked Porter in the middle and he despatched it past Kiely with ease, although an offside flag ended his celebrations.

Valero then found time and space inside the penalty area but dragged his shot a yard wide of the far post.

They rode their luck again two minutes later when Bednar was first to react to a loose ball in the box, only to stab his right-foot shot wide of the target.

Mowbray made a change at the break when he replaced Brunt with Sherjill MacDonald, and it was his side that took the initiative immediately after the restart.

Lee-Barrett made a smart save from Moore's skidding 51st-minute drive, but he needed McCunnie's help seconds later after spilling MacDonald's effort, the full-back just managing to deny Koren as he prepared to pounce on the rebound.

The Baggies were turning the screw, and Lee-Barratt had to come from his line to punch away a dangerous Valero corner three minutes later.

But the home side were continuing to attack, and Bednar earned himself a booking with a rash challenge on Brown as he threatened to make progress down the left.

Opening goal

The opening goal finally arrived with 61 minutes gone, and it was Pools who took the lead after midfielder Gary Liddle was rewarded for his perseverance.

The former Middlesbrough player caught defender Leon Barnett in possession inside his own penalty area, and then laid the ball perfectly into the path of the on-rushing Porter, who made no mistake to send the home crowd into raptures.

The visitors pushed forward in an attempt to force their way back into the game and Lee-Barrett had to maintain his concentration as Valero let fly from distance with 20 minutes remaining.

MacDonald was leading the hunt for an equaliser and fired in a shot which proved too hot for Lee-Barrett to handle 11 minutes from time, although the home defence came to his rescue.

But just as it looked as though Pools had seen off their more illustrious opponents, Koren curled home a superb right-foot shot with just three minutes

remaining to send the tie into extra-time.

The tempo simply increased in the first half of extra-time with Albion hitting the crossbar three times through Moore, substitute Craig Beattie and skipper Jonathan Greening.

But remarkably Hartlepool finished the opening 15 minutes 3-1 ahead after substitutes Foley and Barker struck with 102 and 105 minutes gone respectively.

The fight had gone out of the visitors as the home side started to run down the clock with Wilson's men having claimed a famous scalp.
