Riera: Set to join Liverpool
Espanyol have confirmed Albert Riera is close to finalising his expected move to Liverpool.
Riera has emerged as a target for Liverpool, and city rivals Everton, in recent weeks as he looks to secure a return to the Premier League.
The 26-year-old had been keen to join Liverpool ahead of Everton, but had been set a deadline to complete his switch to Anfield.
On Tuesday, Espanyol gave Riera 72 hours to resolve his future and he is now on the brink of linking up with Rafa Benitez's squad.
A statement on Espanyol's official website confirmed Riera has travelled to Merseyside to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms.
No details of the fee have been disclosed, but reports have put the figure in the £8million region.
Riera's signing will signal the end of Reds manager Benitez's quest to improve his options on the left-hand side of midfield.
Former Mallorca youngster Riera spent the second half of the 2005/06 season on loan at Manchester City, scoring once in 19 appearances.
